Avatar: The Way of Wateris finally in theaters. Ahead of its worldwide release, Zoe Saldaña, who plays Neytiri in the film, shared some stories about how she overcame the fear she struggled with when learning how to freedive.
Avatar: The Way of Waterreturns audiences to Pandora, the homeworld of the Na’vi. Lush and full of bioluminescent creatures, the world has been one of the main draws of the franchise, with its creation bolstered by some impressive VFX work. Now,Avatar: The Way of Watershows off more of Pandora, with some impressive underwater environments playing key parts in the film. As part of the movie’s plot, the cast learned how to freedive, which is diving without oxygen tanks.

In an interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, Saldaña spoke about how she overcame her fears. When asked by a reporter what her reaction to the script was, Saldaña responded by saying she was certain Cameron “had done it again,” and then jokingly stated that she was incredibly excited by the prospect of having to work underwater. The reporter then asked Saldaña what the hardest part of working underwater was, to which Saldaña responded, “I think the hardest part was that I kept getting in my own way, and I know everyone in the cast can relate to that.”
Saldaña revealed she and the rest of the cast gained confidence from taking the classes and realized this was a temporary condition she would have to subject herself to. She praisedAvatar’s motion capture work, saying it was akin to child’s play. Saldaña equated the two and said that actors were the children who never outgrew their imagination.
Avatar: The Way of Watersees the returnof Saldaña’s Neytiri. It’s been more than a decade since the events of the firstAvatar,and in that time, Neytiri and Jake Sully have settled down and had a few children of their own. When humans return to Pandora, Neytiri is in a battle for her and her family’s lives.
TheAvatar: The Way of Watertrailerfeatures a shot of Neytiri in the water, showing off some of Saldaña’s newfound skills. The movie itself delivered on the promise offered by the previews.
