With every new trailer or crumb of information, the hype levels forThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomsomehow manage to continue to increase. From what fans have seen so far, it seems as thoughTears of the Kingdomis going to be a game of gigantic proportions, adding even more content and mechanics than fans were expecting. The latest reveal, found in the most recent trailer, is that players may be able to create their ownvehicles inZelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and if that’s true, then one classicZeldastaple may be facing extinction.

TheLegend of Zeldaserieshas always included horses where it can. While the franchise’s more linear and restricted entries don’t need a form of faster traversal, the more open-ended, exploratory titles do, and the vast majority of the time, that form of transport is going to be Link’s trusty steed. However, ifTears of the Kingdomis letting players forge their own cars and gliders, then horses might end up being obsolete.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s Vehicles Could Render Horses Useless

All sprawling open-world games need to have some form of fast traversal. In modern-era settings liketheFar Cryseries, that can be cars, helicopters, planes, or motorbikes, and in fantasy settings, that job usually falls to a horse. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildquite literally took the franchise to new heights, bringing the series into the open-world genre, and withZeldabeing a fantasy series, horses were a natural part of the game. Once caught and tamed, horses would let the player traverseBreath of the Wild’s open world much faster, but they might be about to be outrun.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s secondDLC, titledThe Champions' Ballad, gave players a brand new form of traversal in a motorbike shaped like a horse. At first, this vehicle seemed a little out of place inZelda’s fantasy world, but thanks to some intricate detailing on the bike itself, the design felt a little more suitable. Now, fans are going to have to prime themselves once again, asZelda: Tears of the Kingdomis seemingly letting players construct their own vehicles.

Thelatest trailer forTears of the Kingdomshowed Link driving some sort of land vehicle. Upon closer inspection, it seems as if this vehicle has been made by fusing together a bunch of materials and parts, such as two big wheels on the back, a large wooden base, and two ornamental front wheels. At the back of the vehicle, a small tank of blue energy can be seen, presumably powering the vehicle.

Though it hasn’t been confirmed that players will be able to forge their own vehicles, this brief glimpse in the recent trailer does heavily imply that it’ll be in the game. On top of the land vehicle, players also spotted some kind of makeshift hovercraft in the trailer with a similar design, featuring four turbines held together by just one slate of metal in the middle.

If players are able to create their own vehicles on the fly inThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, then that essentially renders horses fairly useless. That being said, it’s currently unclear just how easy it’ll be to create these vehicles. The parts and materials needed to make a vehicle may end up taking more time to source and fuse together than it would to just tame a horse and ride it to the player’s destination, and if that’s the case, then horses may still end up being the favored form of transport inTears of the Kingdom.
