Every character inWorld of Warcrafthas to choose two primary professions, but there are three Secondary professions that everyone can have. Some players overlook or neglect them, but they are just as important, maybe even more crucial to the gameplay overall.
Fishing, Cooking, and First Aid are the three secondary professions inWorld of Warcraft. Fishing is the only one that is connected to every other profession in some way, and there are several good reasons that Fishing might be the most important profession in Azeroth.
6The Fishing Contests
It all started in Booty Bay with the weekly Stranglthorn Fishing Contest. Players would collect a quota of Tastyfish along the dangerous tropical coastline, dodging wild animals, vicious Troll tribes, and often each other in this PvP paradise. The contest rewarded some rare and unique fishing gear and was so popular that it spawned a copycat event in Northrend,the Kalu’ak Fishing Derby.

Both contests take place on the weekend, with the Kalu’ak derby taking place on Saturday afternoon and the Stranglethorn competition on Sunday. Rather than filling a quota, players have to find the rare Blacktip Shark. Completing at least one of these contests is a requirement for the Salty Turtle, and characters with a maxed-out fishing skill have a better chance of winning.
5Resources, Toys, & Pets
It’s amazing what a character can find when they cast a line into the water, and there’s a lot more than just fish in those watery depths. No matter where the school of fish is located, there’s a chance of catching a wide variety of useful salvage items along with toys, pets, and even a mount.
There are three non-combat crocodile pets that players can only find by completing the Daily Fishing Quest in Outland, and the famous Mr. Pinchy can be found in any school of fish anywhere, provided the character has a fishing pole. There’s also the Sea Turtle mount, a very rare item that has a chance to drop from any school of fish in Northrend.
4See The Sights of Azeroth
Other players don’t bother to get a closer look at all of Azeroth’s scenic landscapes untilthey want to finish an Exploration-relatedAchievement. Fisherfolks, however, are always looking for the next best fishing spot and have discovered secret places that others never see.

Only the dedicated fishers of Azeroth have seen the sun rising over the Wetlands, the noon sun shining over Qual’Danas, and the moon shining over Dancing Troll Village. The rivers that flow through the green hills of Nagrand are the only place to find Bluefish and Mudfish, some of the most important ingredients for spellcasting consumables.
3Fishing Gear
First Aid has that sexy nurse uniform and Cooking has the Chef’s hat, but Fishing has a whole virtual closet filled with clothing, gear, and accessories. It’s enough to impress even the most experienced RPG player, and even includes bind-to-account items the player’s other characters can also use.
The selection of fishing poles is better than for some weapon classes. There’s a whole rack to choose from, ranging in quality from common all the way up to epic, and they can be obtained in a variety of ways as the player levels the skill. Some of the nicest are random rewards for the daily fishing quests. An exception is the Mastercraft Kalu’ak Fishing Pole, which is available for purchase from the Kalu’ak Factionafter reaching Exalted reputation level.
2Fishing & Other Professions
Almost everything that’s needed for any recipe, whether it’s for Cooking or a crafted professional item, can end up caught on the end of a fishing line. The most obvious resource, fish, isn’t just used to level the Cooking skills, but the two professions go hand in hand when it comes to the grind. Several of the most popular raid consumes are made either from fish or special ingredients made from fish.

Fish like the Oily Blackmouth and Pygmy Suckerfish are important Alchemic regents and are needed for precious potions like the Free Action Potion and the Elixir of Water Walking. Leather, cloth, and even ore of both raw and refined quality are also common finds. Anything that the player can’t use,they can at least turn into goldon the Auction House.
1The Salty Title
One of the more difficult unique, sought-after Achievements is the Accomplished Angler. This is found under the Fishing section of the Professions tab and contains some of the most creative and difficult meta-Achievements invented for the game. There are a ton of requirements to complete this Achievement, and they take the player through raids, enemy cities, and other bizarre locations. One of the requirements is to catch an elusive fish in either Ironforge or Orgrimmar, and yet another is to lure a raid boss out of hiding by fishing for it.
The reward for completing this adventure on the high seas and low lakes is simply a new title, Salty. It seems like a modest reward, but players love new titles for their characters, and customization options inClassicare limited compared to retail.
