Though close-range melee combat is its bread and butter,Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, like many games in the ‘soulslike’ genre, features a robust magic system that acts as a secondary option for both offense and defense. The system is centered aroundWo Long: Fallen Dynasty’s ‘five phases affinities,‘with each element having specific strengths and weaknesses. For example, awaterspell will overtake afirespell, and afirespell will overtake ametalspell. This allows players to create builds centered around the element needed for a specific fight.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynastyseparates all available spells by each phase, creating five spell trees on which points can be spent. The game is extremely generous in how it doles out these ‘phase points,’ giving the player an opportunity to access spells from every tree very early in the game.

How to Get Wizardry Spell Phase Points in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty’s phase points are tied directly to the leveling system. This system is also based around the same five elements:Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, andWater. These elements replace the usualcategories that are frequently found in soulslike games. Once the player has earned enough Genuine Qi, they can add a single point to one of the five ‘virtues,’ with each category offering different passive effects. The players overall level is determined by adding up each point spent. When the player reaches level 5, they will receive a single point to spend on each of the five trees. Following this first award, more points will be added every five levels.
How to Spend Phase Points in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
As the player levels up, they will be notified when they have gained phase points to spend. To spend them, they need only visit a different section of the Battle Flag menu. Just below the option to level up, in the third slot, sits the ‘Wizardry Spells’ choice. Selecting this option, then selecting ‘Learn Wizardry Spells, will take the player to the spell trees.
This screen will supply the player with several important pieces of information. First, the icons near the top of the screen will tell the player which spell tree they are in, and how many points they have to spend on that tree. For example, in the above image, the player has two points to spend in the Water Phase tree.

To spend a phase point, simply hover over the desired spell, and hold down A/X. The viewing box at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen will give the player a preview of the spell, which can allow the player to plan for its eventual use.
Finally, before choosing a spell to purchase, ensure to study the required level for the phase and morale. If the player does not meet both requirements, then the spell with not be able to be used. Keep in mind, morale is only raised on the field of combat.

What are the Best Early-Game Spells?
When players first receive their phase points, they will only have two options for which spell to take. Given that a point is given in every phase, the player will gain five spells immediately. When choosing which spells to take early, the player must consider how they will be using them.
Five Phases Affinities:
As previously mentioned, each phase has a key strength and weakness. The list looks like this:
Players should consider this list when determining which spells to take early. Enemies from every phase will appear throughout the game. These enemies will useelemental attacks that cause dangerous status effects. Using the guide, the player can select a spell that will counter those effects.

The best option is to pick one offensive and one defensive skill from each phase before anything else. At level 5, the first spells chosen should have the ability to ‘overcome’ the enemy using the opposite phase. For example, players can chooseFrost Lanceas their first choice from the Water phase, as it can be used at phase level 1 and requires no morale. This spell can negate several different flame attacks, making it immediately useful. Then, at level 10, players can acquire the defensive spell,Cloud Stance. This will open up both sides of the tree, giving the player more options as they proceed.
The best early spells in the remaining four phases are as follows:

The truth is, the early game spells have enough utility to take players through the whole game. With how generous the game will be with its phase points, players will have to begin taking spells they can’t even use. One of the great things about the game is, once players hit a certain point, they can begin usingWo Long: Fallen Dynasty’s respecsystem to experiment with high-level spells. For some players, it may be worth moving a majority of their skill points into a specific category to fully access certain spells. The system is found in the hidden village, and is completely free.
How to Assign Spells in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
When players have unlocked their desired spells, all that remains is to assign them to the appropriate location on the controller/keyboard. With consoles, players will use the four main buttons (X, Square, O, Triangle on Playstation).
To do this, return to the main menu of the Battle Flag, select Wizardry Spells again, then enter the “Set Wizardry Spells"section. The screen that pops up will feature a small diagram depicting which spell is assigned to which location. In the above image, the player was preparing for the fight with Lu Bu, who uses fire to great effect.

Remember, there are only four slots to assign spells, but five total phases. The player must do their best to anticipate their combat needs for any specific stage. Luckily, the Wizardry Spells menu can be accessed from any Battle Flag in a mission. If certain spells don’t seem to be getting the job done, take the time to recalibrate by assigning different spells.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynastyis available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. There is a free demo available on all platforms until 03/26/23.
