One of the greatest mysteries in theRed Dead Redemptionfranchise is the true identity and story behind the Strange Man. There are strong hints in theRed Dead Redemptiongames that the Strange Man is a supernatural being of some kind, but the games never spell out exactly who he is. While fans may never have concrete answers about the Strange Man’s true identity, one fan has presented a fascinating new theory about who the Strange Man really is.Note that this post will have SPOILERS forRed Dead Redemption.

Some have guessed theStrange Man fromRed Dead Redemptionis God or Satan, and while those theories could very well be true, the new theory from Reddit user Basketballjuice points to a different biblical figure entirely. According to Basketballjuice’s theory, the Strange Man fromRed Dead Redemptionis not God or Satan, but rather Cain. For those who may be unfamiliar with the Cain’s story, he is known as the first murderer, having killed his brother Abel. As punishment, God curses Cain to walk the Earth forever, bearing a mark “so that whoever found him would not slay him.”

According to Basketballjuice’s theory, this is whyJohn Marstonrecognizes the Strange Man despite having never met him before. It also explains the supernatural happenings and provides more context for when John says, “Damn you!” and the Strange Man responds, “Yes, many have.” Another piece of evidence provided by Basketballjuice is that John shoots at the Strange Man three times in the firstRed Dead Redemptiongame, and then later John is shot roughly 21 times. This is a possible nod to the Bible, as God says, “Therefore whoever kills Cain shall suffersevenfoldvengeance.”

Basketballjuice points to another potential clue that the Strange Man could be Cain, pointing out how Cain is referenced inRed Dead Redemption 2. InRed Dead Redemption 2,Jack Marstoncan get a dog named Cain, who is named after the Biblical figure.

It’s an interesting theory for sure, though others are still convinced that the Strange Man is God, Satan, or even Death, as he seems to foreshadowJohn’s deathduring their encounter in the firstRed Dead Redemptiongame. Whatever the case may be, the Strange Man’s appearance inRed Dead Redemption 2only made him more mysterious, and it’s unlikely that Rockstar Games will give fans truly definitive answers about the character’s real identity or purpose.

Red Dead Redemptionis out now for PS3 and Xbox 360.
