Destiny 2and the Light and Darkness Saga have grown the IP into a massive franchise. However, aside from aDestinyCompanion app, Bungie still has yet to explore the benefits of bringing the franchise to mobile platforms.

While there hasn’t been any official confirmation of whether aDestinymobile game will ever happen, recent industry trends suggest that this is a likely possibility. It ultimately seems a mobileDestinygame is more of a matter of when, not if.

Why A Destiny Mobile Game Seems Likely

Bungie is Working on a Cross-Platform Game for PC, Consoles, and Mobile Devices

A recentjob posting at Bungiefor an Incubation Technical Art Lead position states that the studio is working on an upcoming game that will be cross-platform for PC, consoles, and mobile devices. Given therecent leaks and rumors ofDestiny 3, these two projects could very well be one and the same. However, even if this new cross-platform mobile game doesn’t turn out to be related to theDestinyfranchise, Bungie developing a new game that will come to modern mobile devices will naturally pave the way for theDestinyfranchise to eventually explore this kind of opportunity.

The description for this position at Bungie states that this game will be a new IP for the studio, as opposed to being a sequel or spin-off for an existing franchise. However, this could be Bungie’s way of keeping the game’s identity a secret until it reaches the point of a proper announcement, so the possibility of aDestinymobile game already being in development is likely.

More and More Gaming Franchises are Branching out into Mobile Games

Aside from the recentDestiny 3rumors and the rather coincidental job posting,Destiny 2generally meets a lot of criteria that make a mobile port seem highly likely for the franchise. Namely, withDestiny 2already being a cross-platform game with cross-progression between PC and consoles, this is a common sign for other gaming franchises that have eventually received mobile ports, likeWarframe.

Speaking ofWarframe, this game has had an infamous reputation of being one ofthe many ‘Destinykillers’as a rival game within the live-service looter-shooter genre, which has recently received a mobile port for IOS devices. Additionally,Tom Clancy’s The Divisionfranchise is another example of one of theDestinyfranchise’s rivals that will soon be coming to mobile devices. With the recent push from other live-service looter-shooters to branch out onto mobile devices, the competition within this genre is putting growing pressure on theDestinyfranchise to follow suit with a mobile entry in the franchise.

What a Destiny Mobile Game Could Bring to the Franchise

Thenew-player experience inDestiny 2is something that has always been a few steps behind the game’s constant cycle of new content updates. The biggest advantage that a mobileDestinygame could have is to make the game more accessible, which would benefit both new and existing players.

Not to mention, even thoughDestiny 2has an existing community of longtime PC and Console players, bringing the franchise to mobile platforms could grow the playerbase exponentially. Such a surge of new players would not only benefit theDestinyfranchise, but it could also support future endeavors for the studio’s other IPs, likeBungie’s upcoming Marathon reboot. Ultimately, whether it happens duringDestiny 2’s lifetime, or if it will be for another game in the franchise, aDestinymobile game seems inevitable at this point. Considering the growing industry pressure and the coincidental circumstances of Bungie’s upcoming projects, such a thing might even be sooner rather than later.
