Marvel Studios’ entire premise forWhat If…?is simply giving its most famous heroes alternate storylines in a different timeline. However, that doesn’t mean the series will be recycling exactly the same characters, especially since Captain Carter is set to take the spotlight.
With Tony Stark and Steve Rogers gone, it’s been a bit of mystery as to who will succeed them as the team leader in the MCU’s Phase Four, but at least when it comes to the animated realm, Peggy Carter is completely stepping up for the latter. InWhat If…?’s setting, destiny makes sure Carter is the one to take the super-soldier serum to become the MCU’s version of the comic book character known as Captain Britain, or in this case Captain Carter.

In that regard, Captain Carter is not alone. What If…?executive producer Brad Winderbaum told Comic Book Resources during a recent interview that from the early stage “there was going to be a character that bubbles up and became more important.” Just like in pastAvengers’movies, that alone shouldn’t make this revamped Peggy Carter more important. However, Winderbaum claims she has a “strong relationship with The Watcher, who is really our driving force behind the series,” and that’s really what makes her special.
Hayley Atwell is set to reprise her role as a much different Peggy Carter and she’ll stick around for a while. Winderbaum made clear the character would appear in as many seasons asWhat If…?goes on to have, so maybe that’s whyCaptain Carter got such an awesome poster. Meanwhile, The Watcher’s debut also carries a ton of meaning, and judging from the series’ trailer, this onlooking being is among the few who really knows what’s going on in the Multiverse.
Marvel had already teased The Watcher, but now with Captain Carter also getting an official poster forWhat If…?it’s clear that these two will probably be the ones moving the plot forward. As for Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa/Star-Lord, Winderbaum was also the one to confirm the late actor is featured in only four episodes, which were edited posthumously in a way that honors his legacy without significatively altering the tone of his character.
The pandemic forced Disney Plus’s first Marvel Studios exclusives to be reshuffled. However, now that audiences are finally used to the idea of seeing another Captain America thanks toThe Falcon and The Winter Soldier, What If…?comes as the perfect palate cleanserafterLokialready set the Multiversefree in order to get ready for what Spider-Man and Doctor Strange will bring to the many tables in different dimensions.
