For those who really like a challenge, there’s a new mod for the remake ofResident Evil 4that ups the difficulty, which includes increasing Merchant prices and changing enemy damage output. Currently listed as one of thehighest-rated video games of 2023, more than meeting the expectations that had built up for some time, Capcom’s recent remake has been doing tremendously well. It’s not perfect by any means, but the overall reception has been largely glowing for this modern take on anREclassic.

Of course, it isn’t just a straight retelling of the original 2005 release. TheResident Evil 4remake brings with it some notable changeslike a reduction in QTEs, more contemporary visuals and controls, new dynamics between characters, plus a more streamlined approach to the gameplay. On top of that, the modding community immediately got to work to implement its own changes, one of which is probably best suited for the more sadistic player.

Simply called “Nightmare V1.0,” Nexus Mods user Multi has decided thatResident Evil 4needed to turn up the difficulty dial a notch with a mod that makes the remake more punishing. For starters, the Merchant’s prices are now doubled almost across the board, and items Leon is carrying now have their value reduced by 25%. The mod also makes it so that many enemies, though not all of them, will deal more damage, and a note on the Nexus page highly recommends always carrying a knife because “grabs can be lethal.” Speaking of knives, repairing it “won’t be easy” with this mod, and there’s also been a change to the yellow herb, which now determines whether an attack later on can be survived. The mod’s creator also says that more is likely to come in the future.

WhileResident Evil 4’s Professional difficulty modeis already pretty tough, it seems as though Multi wanted to give people something even more challenging. However, not everyone wants an overly stressful time when it comes to games, even horror ones, which is why the vanilla experience comes with an Assisted Mode for a less difficult playthrough.

Even with this easier setting, theResident Evil 4remake can still be hard in places, such as having smarter enemy AI or the need to repair knives and armor. Newcomers to the game, especially those who didn’t play the original, may find even the opening sections quite intense and overwhelming, but if the modding community proves anything, it’s that some fans think games can always stand to be tougher.

Resident Evil 4is available on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
