The World Ends With Youis one of the most beloved cult classic titles Square Enix has ever released. Created by the team and artists behind theKingdom Heartsfranchise,The World Ends With Youis a action RPG originally released for the Nintendo DS in 2007 which sees Neku Sakuraba, an anti-social teenage boy, and a slew of supporting characters as they fight for survival in an alternate version of Tokyo’s Shibuya shopping district. While the game has never seen any sort of true follow-up, it has been re-released on iOS and Android and saw an enhanced re-release on Nintendo Switch in 2018 in the form ofThe World Ends With You: Final Remix, which added additional story content and a new epilogue, leaving many to speculate if Square Enix may be planning a sequel. That may be the case, if recent rumors are anything to go off.

The game’s producer and character designer, Tetsuya Nomura, has never been shy about his desire to make a sequelto the Nintendo DS classic. With both theseKingdom Hearts 3andFinal Fantasy 7 Remakebehind him, it may finally be time that Tetsuya Nomura gets to work on aThe World Ends With Yousequel, especially if credibleSuper Smash Bros. Earlier this month, The Society for Promotion of Japanese Animation announced thatthis year’s Anime Expo will be held digitallyas an event called Anime Expo Lite. Shortly after, they revealed the first look at the poster for this year’s event, which features characters fromThe World Ends With You. This lead ResetEra’sSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatedownloadable content discussion thread to speculate if this was teasing the reveal of a character fromThe World Ends With YoujoiningSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. Replying to a user named “Garrod_Ran,” Tansut commented:

While this lead many to speculate if Tansut was teasing that the game’s protagonist Neku, would be joiningSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, as they had previously correctly hinted atFinal Fantasy 7’s Cloud andDragon Quest 11’s Hero joining the series, Tansut later clarified that he was referring to a sequel. Tansut previously teased the possibility of a sequel last October when he commented “Would the world end with you all if someone were to directly leak something in this thread? It can wait until next year if that’s the case, and it’s not like it only would be relevant to just this console eventually anyway.”

This adds to the mounting possibility thatThe World Ends With Youwill likely see some sort of sequel announcement at this year’s Anime Expo Lite event, which will take place on July 3rd and 4th 2020.
