The first trailer forThe Santa Clauseshas dropped. The TV show aims to be a continuation ofThe Santa Clausefilm series, with Tim Allen’s Scott Calvin aiming to retire as Santa Claus and spend some time with his family, which has grown since the last film was released back in 2006.

Allen was confirmed to be returning for aSanta Clausetelevision show for Disney Plusway back in January. The series eventually gained the titleThe Santa Clauses, and it was confirmed that many of the original cast members of the franchise would be returning. The franchise, which began back in 1994 withThe Santa Clause, has lain dormant for 16 years sinceThe Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clausepremiered. The basic plot of the franchise is that Scott Calvin accidentally killed the last Santa Claus, thinking he was a home invader. Since a Santa is required, he ends up embracing the role to continue the Christmas spirit, though it puts a strain on his relationships.

The Santa Clausestrailer features plenty of returning characters, including Scott’s wife, Carol (Elizabeth Mitchell) and Scott’s son Charlie from the original film (still played by Eric Lloyd). Fan-favorite elf Bernard (David Krumholtz) also makes a return after being absent in the third film of the series. The Santa Clausestrailer showcases the plot of theDisney Plusseries, in which the Christmas mood has been down these last few years and Scott Calvin seeks to retire to spend time with his wife and adolescent children, Buddy “Cal” Calvin-Claus (born in the third film of the series and played here by Austin Kane) and Sandra Calvin-Claus (played by Elizabeth Allen Dick). Scott’s unseen replacement, however, appears to be destroying Christmas, which causes elves to start disappearing. Scott and his family then set off back to the North Pole to save the elves they’ve come to know and love.

The Santa Clauseisn’t the only Christmas classic that’s getting a sequel.A Christmas Storysequel was announcedearlier this year, and it is slated to premiere around the same time asThe Santa Clauses. Both projects will revolve around older versions of their central characters trying to focus on their families, asA Christmas Story Christmaswill tell the story of adult Ralphie trying to give his children the perfect holiday. It looks like this year’s holiday season will be full of nostalgia.

The Santa Clauseslooks promising, as it seems to be full of fan service but won’t be relying on it. Kal Penn’s new character in particular seems to be playing a major part, and Scott’s son Cal is eager to go out and explore the world on his own, after having spent much of it at the North Pole (his dream is to meet a crossing guard). It looks like a fun adventure for the family and a unique Christmas adventure since, usually,Christmas is reserved for movies.

The Santa Clausespremieres on Disney Plus on July 20, 2025.
