The Initiativehas been rather quiet since its big reveal ofPerfect Darknearly a year ago, but that doesn’t mean the company hasn’t been making any moves. It appears thatThe Initiativeis hiring for a lead producer to join its team, and help bringPerfect Darkto the finish line.
Prior toPerfect Dark’s reveal at The Game Awards 2020, The Initiative had already been making industry waves due to the team it was assembling. DespitePerfect Darkbeing The Initiative’s first game, the developers working on it are some of the industry’s finest, many of which coming from some of PlayStation’s first-party studios. From former Santa Monica Studio and Naughty Dog developers, to more broadly, Bungie and Crystal Dynamics employees, The Initiative was assembling a stellar roster of developmental talent in advance ofPerfect Dark’s formal announcement. The game was apparently already in a playable state well before last year’s The Game Awards ceremony.

A new lead producer listing at The Initiative has appeared, giving clues as to wherePerfect Darkis at in development. Generally, therole of a lead producer in the video game industryentails being the connection between the game development teams and the stakeholders who are externally helping a game get made, and this position at The Initiative seems right in line with this understanding. “The Initiative has an immediate opening for an experienced Lead Producer to support the development team and external partners.” The Initiative writes in the job listing. Based on the language of the listing, it is possible thatPerfect Darkis nearing the end of its development.
The responsibilities and qualifications of this position describe a versatile lead producer with game development experience. “Qualified applicants need to be highly organized with strong communication skills to successfully manage creative teams and ensure the timely delivery of high quality content,” The Initiative states, emphasizing some of the position’s responsibilities and its time-driven nature. Those looking to apply must have worked at least 8 years as a producer in game developement, with “experience outsourcing and asset management.“The Initiative’s previous hireshave been largely on the game development side, but this position seems to be a bit of both the development and business sides of the industry.
Since it’s been a year since fans last sawPerfect Dark, it is hard to say where the game really is at in development. In The Game Awards 2020 trailer, The Initiative provided a first look atPerfect Dark’s tone, art style, and premise, but had nothing to show gameplay wise, which in most cases means the game is still quite a way’s away. However, considering the game was already in a playable state before its reveal, perhapsPerfect Darkis much closer than expected. Either way, whoever lands the lead producer position atThe Initiativewill have an important part to play in making that game a reality.
