PLEASE NOTE: This article contains MASSIVE Spoilers for The Callisto Protocol. Proceed at your own risk.
The Callisto Protocolis a game that doesn’t shy away from showing extra gore and violence at every turn, to the point that it even features one of the grisliest methods for collecting loot in gaming, which consists of smashing bodies with a foot and search the remains for items or credits. The world built by Striking Distance Studios is also no stranger to violence in general, and people don’t seem to have a lot of regard for human life and how it’s lived, whichThe Callisto Protocolcapitalizes on especially in the section where Jacob and Dani explore the miners' colony. Many people die in the outbreak in Black Iron Prison as well, but they are mostly unnamed characters or individuals whose CORE Jacob ends up harvesting.

BecauseThe Callisto Protocol’s characters are mostly used to advance the plot, they don’t really come in droves, and there is only a handful of them that Striking Distance Studios made more relevant. As such, even with all the blood-spilling events in the game, not too many named characters end up dying inThe Callisto Protocol, but those that do generally have a major role leading up to their demise. Others, like Jacob and Doctor Mahler, are presumed dead after the warden activates the self-destruction sequence of the facility, butThe Callisto Protocol’s ending sets up sequelsfor them as well.

Max
The first major death happens minutes into the game, with Jacob’s co-pilot and friend, Max, dying when their ship crashes into Callisto after they are boarded by Dani and other members of The Outer Way. Dani and her companions were looking for suspicious cargo that Jacob and Max were transporting, which later in the game is revealed to be bioweapons - capsules wherebiophage larvaeare kept alive to unleash on unsuspecting colonies. Max doesn’t play a major role in Callisto Protocol, but he later acts as a sort of manifestation of Jacob’s conscience as he starts to regret the things he has done for money.
Elias
The first bigdeath inThe Callisto Protocolis that of Elias, a character that players meet very early into the game, as he is a fellow inmate at Black Iron Prison. In bits of dialogue from the tram station, Elias tells Jacob that he was imprisoned because he killed someone, and while he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, he fully takes the blame for what happened, and he knows he could have done better. Perhaps inspired by his words and then by the hard evidence of the human cost of experimenting with the biophage virus, Jacob starts to change for the better.
However, after the tram station, Jacob and Elias are separated when a mutated Captain Ferris finds them and ejects them onto Callisto during a storm. Elias' suit doesn’t work properly as a result, and when Jacob finds him it’s already too late to do anything.

Captain Ferris
Thefinal boss ofThe Callisto Protocolis indeed Captain Ferris, whom Jacob encounters after the warden has experimented with him to make him “Subject Alpha,” the perfect recipient for the virus who can actually control it. Ferris partially succumbs to the virus while fighting Jacob, as he transforms into a behemoth with shielding capabilities as well as incredible offensive prowess.
However, Jacob eventually defeats Ferris with his arsenal of weapons, with the cause of death varying based on what players used during the encounter. This is the last major death inThe Callisto Protocol, with the survivors seemingly being Dani, Jacob, Doctor Mahler, and the warden ofBlack Iron Prison.
The Callisto Protocolis out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.
