TheBorderlandsfranchise is continuing to expand with the upcomingTiny Tina’s Wonderlands, a spin-off that builds off the concept of Assault on Dragon Keep. However, it is not the onlyBorderlandsspin-off to be released over the years, asTales from the Borderlandsdropped back in 2014. Created by Telltale, the game featured the developer’s unique choice-based approach and reliance on QTEs, ensuring it was quite different from the looter shooter styleBorderlandsis known for.
Withthe hype forThe Wolf Among Us 2showing that there is still interest in Telltale’s unique brand of video games, and the originalTales from the Borderlandsgame ending on a cliffhanger, a follow-up makes perfect sense. A sequel could bring some characters back to the forefront of the story prior toBorderlands 4’s inevitable release, allowing them to have a prominent role in the next mainline game.

What Tales from the Borderlands 2 Could Accomplish
The first and most important thingTales from the Borderlands 2could do is provide answers regarding the original game’s cliffhanger. ThoughRhys appears inBorderlands 3and has a fairly prominent role as Atlas CEO, players do not learn what happened after he touched the chest in The Vault of the Traveler. Rhys never touches on where he went, maintaining the mystery from the Telltale game’s vague ending.
This is particularly interesting because Fiona is nowhere to be seen inBorderlands 3. While Rhys still has a picture of Sasha on his desk, indicating the feelings he has for Fiona’s sister, it is unclear where exactly Fiona has gone. A vague audio log sees Rhys talking toZer0about an attempt to track down an unnamed woman, which could be either Fiona or Sasha.Tales from the Borderlands 2could provide the answers to his search, with fans finally learning where Fiona has gone.
Aside from providing answers on the whereabouts of Fiona,Tales from the Borderlands 2could set up some plot points forBorderlands 4. Not only could Fiona be set up as a playable Vault Hunter, but players could get an update on howGortysand Loader Bot’s relationship is working out. The same could happen with Athena and Springs, as the couple goes unmentioned inBorderlands 3. Even if both pairs are happy to be away from the action, seeing them once again would be exciting for fans. It would also make it easier for Gearbox to bring them back inBorderlands 4, as they would be much less obscure.
With the upcomingTiny Tina’s Wonderlandsset shortly afterBorderlands 2, Gearbox is clearly willing to play around with the series’ timeline a bit. As such, aTales from the Borderlandssequel could also be set shortly after the original Season, exploring Rhys’s partnership with Zer0 and the character’s journey to rebuild Atlas. AnotherBorderlands 3prequel would still be able to provide someanswers regarding Fiona’s fate, and no matter when it is set, it would undoubtedly be an entertaining affair.
With aBorderlands 3writer wanting to work onTales from the Borderlands 2, it seems like there is interest in a potential follow-up. With the original game relaunched on digital storefronts just last year, perhaps it was a sign of things to come. Tales from theBorderlandsmay not be as successful as the mainBorderlandsgames, but it is a cult classic for a reason. With top-notch humor, dozens of memorable moments, and some of the best characters in the series, another Telltale-madeBorderlandsgame would be a great detour to take before the next major game launches.
