Summary

TheSupermanElseworlds movie by JJ Abrams received an update from DCU head James Gunn, and this one is more promising than those for past DC movies.

Gunn, the new head of DC Universe, said he and Peter Safran will work together to revamp the DC movie and TV franchise. When Gunn initiatedthe launch of DC Studios withSuperman: Legacy, the expectation was that all otherSupermanprojects would be temporarily set aside. However, the filmmaker has given a promising update on Abrams' Superman film, and it seems fans will get not one but twoSupermanfilms shortly.

OnThreads, one user asked Gunn, “is that AbramsSupermanElseworld[s] project still in development." In response, Gunn said, “Yes.” Although the filmmaker didn’t elaborate on the comments, this is not the first time Gunn has sparked a conversation about Abrams' comic book adaptation.

For the uninitiated,Ta-Nehisi Coates was crafting a newSupermanscriptcharacterized as a “20th-century period piece” focusing on a Black iteration of the iconic Man of Steel. Although information about the project was initially scarce, the involvement of Abrams as a producer added weight to the notion that it could materialize and become a part of Warner Bros.' offerings. However, fans never got to know anything substantial about the project. Earlier this year, Gunn gave a short update on the project and said in an interview that Abrams’Supermanfilm andSuperman: Legacyare two different films, with no relation whatsoever. But things went downhill when Gunn revealed that he hadn’t seen or read the script for Abrams' Superman movie.

Gunn has already announced that the Elseworlds franchise won’t start in 2024, meaningJoker 2won’t be a part of the Elseworlds branding. The DCU head recently announced that the first movies in the Elseworlds franchise won’t arrive in theatres before 2025. So,The Batman Part 2and Abrams' Superman film might be the first two projects in the Elseworlds branding. No other substantial details about Abrams' movie have been shared with the fans.

Nevertheless, Gunn’s recent comments have given viewers hope that they will get two versions of Superman in the coming years. Although Warner Bros. has a bad habit of shelving movies, including theZatanna movie written by Emerald Fennell, fans would be hoping to get some details about the forthcoming project.

Superman: Legacyis scheduled to hit theaters on July 28, 2025.
