Summary

Star Warshas no shortage of content, but fans may be disappointed to hear that Taika Waititi’s film hasn’t reached the writing stage.

Waititi has proven himself in the scope of big franchises such as Marvel. ThoughThor: Love and Thunderfailed to meet expectations, no one can doubt his contribution to the series.Star Warswas the next logical step, and theWhat We Do In the Shadowsdirector was given the sci-fi universe to tinker with. However, it’s no surprise that his venture into a galaxy far, far away has hit a bit of a snag.

In the past,Waititi confessed he was struggling with hisStar Warsfeature. More recently, at TIFF, he further gave a hint of what stage he is at. As reported byVariety, Waititi was at the event honoringStranger Thingsproducer Shawn Levy and figured he would be a great pick for aStar Warsfeature. “Unlike me, let’s hope he manages to finish a script for that,” Waititi said.

Delivered in the pithy tone that Waititi is known for, the audience at TIFF greeted him with a chorus of laughter. This comment is the type of humor that is prevalent in all the director’s films. He is single-handedly responsible for encouraging Chris Hemsworth back into the Marvel-sphere, and his work in thesincere pirate series titledOur Flag Means Deathdemonstrates an equally humorous take on Blackbeard.

But perhaps his comments are so funny because there is a ring of truth. Waititi had a fresh take on Thor, but even that didn’t endear fans to the follow-up toRagnarok.Star Warsis a franchise with more longevity and, frankly, more vitriol from fans. Viewers have all seen what happens to directors who try to do something different. They chew them up and spit them out. Thoughstill proud ofStar Wars: The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson is one of the most notorious recent examples of this. After being written into a corner with Luke’s whereabouts inThe Last Jedi, theKnives Outdirector did his best to salvage what he could out of Luke’s motivations, and it went about as well as fans might expect.

If Waititi wants to avoid the same fate, the best thing to do is take his time. PerhapsThor: Love and Thunderwould have done better without the immense Marvel pressure and heaps of content left on the cutting room floor. But then again, maybe fans should learn to have a sense of humor and take Waititi’s words for what they are: a joke.

TheStar Warsfranchise is streaming on Disney Plus.
