Summary

The upcomingStar Wars: Ahsokapremiere on Disney Plus has inspired creative discourse regarding what they can expect from the highly-anticipated series. Though some have been confident in the identity of a mystery villain teased in the trailers, a new theory now suggests that his identity will be one heck of a curveball.

In recent trailers and previews forAhsoka, an enigmatic new masked Inquisitor has been featured numerous times, complete with the signature Inquisitor black armor and spinny lightsaber. InStar Warscanon, Inquisitors are Force users taken in by Emperor Palpatine and trained to become Jedi hunters, with many even being captured and heavily conditioned Jedi. Given this knowledge, many fans believedthe new figure inAhsokais Starkillerfrom theStar Wars: The Force Unleashedvideo games, a now non-canon character played by Sam Witwer who shares a similar backstory to the Inquisitors.

However, a particularly wild new theory (viaLooper) now challenges that assertion. The Starkiller theory came about due to the name of the new Inquisitor, Marrok. The Force Unleashedfans quickly took note of its similarity to the surname of Galen Marek, the original name of Starkiller before Darth Vader twisted him into his apprentice. However, Marrok didn’t necessarily come from a vacuum. In the animated seriesStar Wars: The Clone Wars, Marrok is the name of a fearsome Anooba creature loyal to the famously effective bounty hunter Embo. This has led to the idea that Embo himself may be Marrok.

This theory comes from a place of more than just simple speculation. It wouldn’t be farfetched forAhsokacreator Dave Filonito bring back the character. During the original run ofThe Clone Wars, Filoni himself voiced Embo, originally intending the eventual fan-favorite as a one-off character before his popularity proved rather substantial. So that alone would feel appropriate given the Lucasfilm executive creative director’s connection to the character and the series he stemmed from.

Aside from that, fellowformerly animated bounty hunter Cad Banerecently jumped to live-action inThe Book of Boba Fett. Despite the series garnering a mixed reception from fans, the excitement to see the beloved character in a new setting was nearly universal among long-time viewers. That response could easily open the door to more favorites fromThe Clone Warstaking similar leaps into new shows, including Embo.

Finally, Embo got a sneaky mention already in the animated seriesStar Wars Rebels, where the Mandalorian artist and warrior Sabine Wren had created a painting of the bounty hunter in a blink-and-miss-it moment. GivenAhsoka’s status as an unofficial sequel toRebels, that’s just one more log on this particular fire. This may all be a theory, but it’s surprisingly plausible.

Star Wars: Ahsokawill premiere its first 2 episodes on August 23rd on Disney Plus.
