With several beloved sequel shows returning in Spring, it was expected that they would also have some great accompanying OPs. But there have been a couple of wild card openings that have managed to be even better than some heavyweight titles.

8Kaguya-sama: Love is War - ULTRA ROMANTIC -

The first twoKaguya-sama: Love is Waropenings are extremely well known to ooze jazz and charm with a vocal lead so smooth that it sounds like his lungs have been replaced with chocolate profiteroles.

The opening forKaguya-sama: Love is War - ULTRA ROMANTIC -certainly follows the trend as Masayuki Suzukiknocks it out of the park once again. His newest song “GIRI GIRI feat Suu (GIRI GIRI feat. すぅ)” follows the same style and pace as the other OPs which expertly creates an analogous and consistent tone for the whole series.

7Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie

Coming right off theheels ofMy Dress-Up Darling,Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutieis the biggest rom-com of Spring 2022 and while the anime has seen mixed reviews the OP certainly delivers. The catchy beat and the clever editing of multiple different aspects ratios make the opening deeply fun to watch.

The song for the OP is called “Honey Jet Coaster” by Nasou and seems to deliver the upbeat wholesome tone of the popular manga series well. The song does an excellent job of mirroring the bright color palette and fast pace of the visuals.

6Love After World Domination

One of the stranger shows of Spring 2022 has an opening that tonally leans into how crazy the premise of the show is. On paper,Love After World Dominationsounds rather generic but one listen to the OP doesn’t just show how gorgeous the animation is but how whacky andover-the-top the plot can get.

The parody of many anime tropes can be seen throughout the OP with the song “Koi wa Explosion (リーラの調べ)” by Masayoshi Oishi & Yukari Tamura playing up the most bombastic elements with the fast-paced jazz.

The song for the second OP is called “Bring Back (リーラの調べ)” by Madkid who is returning after composing the brilliant OP for the first season. This second OP brings a much heavier sound than the first vibrant OP but is much more thematically resonant for the current point in the story.

4Summer Time Render

Comparatively different from many of the OPs in Spring 2022,Summer Time Renderpresents a more nostalgic image and sound reminiscent of a 2000s-era anime which would get fans excited about a new episode. Its melancholic nature is understandable due to the content of the anime.

The opening song is titled “Hoshi ga Oyogu (星が泳ぐ)” and accompanies much more subdued opening visuals than other OPs in Spring 2022. However, the almost abstract vibe of the visuals effectively piques viewers' curiosity because of how little it gives away.

3Komi-san Can’t Communicate Season 2

The cutest anime has returned with another OP full of wholesome fun inKomi-san Can’t Communicate Season 2. The OP itself practically picks up from the very last scene of season one and perfectly encapsulates the bite-sized gratifyingcomedy structure the show emulates.

The song for this season’s OP is “Ao 100-iro (青100色)” by Miku Itou and achieves exactly what the first does in showing the friendship between Komi and Tadano along with the other members of the bizarre cast.

2SPYxFAMILY

Arguably the most popular show of the season also certainly does not disappoint with its opening either, theSPYxFAMILYOPdoes an excellent jobof reflecting the themes of the anime whilst also having an extremely catchy song.

“Mixed Nuts (ミックスナッツ)” by Official HIGE DANdism accentuates the contrasting childlike and realistic noir art styles to great effect. The fast-paced editing and vibrant color transitions further elevate the OP to make it an absolute joy to behold, as expected of the prolific standards of Studio Wit.

1Ya Boy Kongming!

Of course, the obvious standout for the best opening in Spring 2022 goes toYa Boy Kongming!with an opening that could not sell the anime better to prospective viewers. The characters in the opening are animated so fluidly to the point that they look like they’regrooving just as much as fans are.

The song that accompanies these visuals is “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (チキチキバンバン)” by QUEENDOM which is experiencing viral success and drawing an abundance of people to their other music and to the relatively obscure manga the anime is based on.
