Prior to the beginning of E3 and the Summer Game Fest, SEGA held its own event to celebrate all thingsSonic the Hedgehog,debuting an early look at the next mainline entry in the series anda collection of classic games known as theSonic Originscollection.Alongside both announcements, Sonic Team also revealed a long-rumored remaster, withSonic Colors: Ultimategetting a fast-paced trailer and a September release date.
For those wanting to see how the belovedSonictitle will look in its 4K re-release, the franchise’s official YouTube account has just showcased a new look at the game, highlighting the Blue Blur’s adventures during Planet Wisp’s fourth act. The footage clocks in at just under 2 minutes, showing the video game mascot drifting around dirt roads and leaping across industrial platforms.

As well as highlightingColor’s lightning-fast gameplay and Wisp-based abilities, Planet Wisp: Act 4 makes for a good showcase ofUltimate’senhanced visuals and 60 FPS gameplay in action, as Sonic hops between areas and boosts through enemies while navigating a mix of 2D and 3D sections. Although it offers fans little in terms of new content, the enhanced frame rate definitely seems to make a difference, especially considering so much ofColors’gameplay relies on fast-paced platforming. The clip is the latest in a lineup of levels shown during E3, withsections from Asteroid Coaster and Tropical Resort also premiering over the last few days.
For those who missed the trailer last month,Sonic Colors' revival will come with a host of goodies for longtime fans when it launches on PC and consoles this Fall. The remaster’s physical edition will include a key chain of Baby Sonic from last year’sSonic the Hedgehogmovie, while the Digital Deluxe version promises early access for pre-ordering players, exclusive music, gold and silver wearables, exclusive player icons, and the “Sonic Movie boost.”
While it’ll be SEGA’s main offering toSonic the Hedgehogfans this year, it has a lot in store for 2022. Not only will Sonic’s latest adventure hit consoles and PC, with a recent leak statingit’s titledSonic Rangersand heavily inspired by Nintendo’s work onBreath of the Wild,but a follow-up to the mascot’s live-action movie will also hit theaters. Although the previous film’s post-credits stinger revealed that Tails would be joining Sonic for a sequel, new images from the movie’s set have all but confirmed thatKnuckles will be making his big-screen debut too. The trio will be joined by Jim Carrey, who is set to reprise his role as Eggman. Fans can expect to see the movie in theaters on April 8 next year.
Sonic Colors: Ultimatewill hit PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on September 7.
