Summary
ASkyrimplayer lost their dedicated companion Lydia in a bizarre and unexpected way.The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, originally released in 2011, is one of the most beloved video games ever made, having sold more than 60 million copies in its lifetime across several platforms.
Since its release,Skyrimplayers have been enchanted by its vast open world, its idyllic musical score, its endearing characters, and overall high-fantasy setting. But a sometimes frustrating andoccasionally funny part of theSkyrimexperience is its jankiness. Games released by Bethesda Game Studios tend to release in a buggy state and often remain so, to some degree, even after several initial patch updates. Fans usually take it upon themselves to patch BGS games via mod loaders like Nexus Mods. But even with several official and unofficial patches installed, a game likeSkyrim, with its massive world filled with a complex tapestry of systems and mechanics that weave in and out of each other, can still break in ways that are often strange and hilarious.

With just a five-second video clip posted to theSkyrimsubreddit, a player who goes by Hopeful-Letterhead82 captures the beauty, wonder, and jankiness that often makes Bethesda’s games, particularlySkyrim, beloved by so many gamers. Hopeful-Letterhead82’s version of the Dragonborn was having a pleasant time admiring and collecting butterflies that fluttered overhead. They turned to take a quick peek at what their loyal companion Lydia was up to behind them, only to discover that Lydia sinking through the floor and out of view like she had stepped in quicksand. It was another in a long line ofsimple walks throughSkyrimthat suddenly glitch in wild ways.
It’s a surreal experience doing something as idyllic and mundane as admiring butterflies and suddenly finding that the warrior who has sworn allegiance to you is dipping through solid matter andphasing out of existence entirelylike she was wading into a lake. But that’s a part ofSkyrim’s charm at this point, and it’s easily forgivable given how much the game has to offer.
