San Diego Comic-Con 2020 has officially been cancelled. The convention usuallyshowcases anticipated upcoming content, making this a big disappointment for many.
This isn’t such a huge shock for some, after CA Governor Newsom’sdoubts on large events being heldin the near future. Thankfully, 2021 SDCC is still planned to continue, and will take place July 22-25, 2021. In its announcement, Comic-Con explains that “health advisories and recent statements by the Governor of California” cast enough doubts on the safety of the event that it decided to cancel.

Comic-Con International plans to email badge-holders with details on how to either get a refund for 2020 or transfer their badge to 2021. Early Bird hotel reservations booked through onPeak will also be refunded. Badge-holders have been asked to wait a few days until these emails go out, and that there is no need for any action on their part in the meantime.
The incredibly popular event has been held annually since 1970, and this year will be the first year that SDCC is cancelled. The convention celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, and many fans were looking forward to what this year’s event would bring. SDCC brings together fans of all stripes: video games, movies, TV, and comics. The event includes panels and guests that have traditionally unveiled new content that fans can get excited about, like theOverwatchZarya comicrevealed at last year’s convention.
Although many fans will miss out on a yearly opportunity to meet up, there is the possibility that some events and panels may still be held digitally, asGamescom 2020 might be doing. Although nothing is confirmed yet, this would certainly be an exciting way for fans to still see upcoming content for the next year, and maybe even see the celebrity guests that SDCC usually invites. Details are still unfolding, and Comic-Con International has not yet announced anything other than the cancellation and refunding.
While stuck at home and contributing to social distancing, fans can still interact with each other via online gaming events and broadcasts. There are plenty ofmultiplayer and co-op games availablefor gamers to connect with each other digitally. Although it’s disappointing that San Diego Comic-Con can’t go on this year, at-home gaming and social media are still great ways for people to experience games and fan culture together.
