Final Fantasy 1toFinal Fantasy 6have all been rated by the ESRB for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. For the most part, Square Enix has done a good job bringing its classicFinal Fantasytitles to modern platforms. Just this year the studio released remasters ofChrono CrossandTactics Ogre, withCrisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunionalso gearing up for release later this week. This makes the absence of theFinal Fantasy Pixel Remasterson modern platforms all the more confusing, as they are currently only available on PC and mobile devices. According to the ESRB however, thePixel Remasterscould be arriving on Nintendo Switch and PS4 very soon.

In 2021, Square Enix announcedFinal Fantasy Pixel Remaster, a series of remasters and re-releases of the classic mainlineFinal Fantasygames up toFinal Fantasy 6. These remasters would include fully remade visuals, new quality of life features, and even entirely new, rearranged music for each of the titles. ThePixel Remasterreleases began with the release ofFinal Fantasyon PC and mobile on July 2021, andconcluded with the release ofFinal Fantasy 6on the same platforms in February 2022.

The biggest question on the minds of mostFinal Fantasyfans were why Square Enix had not yet decided to bring the titles to platforms like Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 4. Thankfully, it appears that these versions just needed extra work, as the ESRB has leaked listings for thePixel Remasterversions ofFinal Fantasy,Final Fantasy 2,Final Fantasy 3,Final Fantasy 4,Final Fantasy 5, andFinal Fantasy 6for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. This listing appears to imply that not only are these games coming to Nintendo and Sony’s platforms, but that their release is imminent.

This listing also implies that like on PC and mobile, fans will have to purchase each title individuallyas opposed to as part of aFinal Fantasycollection, however a bundle will likely also be available for purchase. What this means for a physical edition remains to be seen.

For many of these games, this is their first time appearing on modern platforms in many years. As of right now, the PlayStation Vita remainsthe only way to playFinal Fantasy 1toFinal Fantasy 10on modern consoles, which is really saying something. The release of these remasters on consoles will finally help make the titles available to fans whose entry to theFinal Fantasyuniverse could have been through one of the more recent titles likeFinal Fantasy 15orFinal Fantasy 7 Remake.
