News of the new trilogy first came out in 2017 around the time Johnson’sStar Wars: The Last Jediwas released. It was reported that Johnson would write and direct three new movies that would explore new characters and new areas of theStar Warsuniverse. Since then, there has been little talk of Johnson’s ongoing involvement withStar Warsand many speculated that the trilogy had been canceled followingthe divisive reaction toThe Last Jedi. The fact that it was not mentioned at all during Disney’s Investor Day in December 2020 added fuel to these reports.

If this is indeed a confirmation from Johnson, it is exciting news, albeit without much real information. Based on Wilson’s tweet, it sounds like Johnson is still in the early stages of the project and will likely still be a while until there is some solid news. Meanwhile, Johnson has kept busy with his critically acclaimed 2019 movieKnives Outand is apparently at work on a sequel to that hit movie.

FollowingStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, enthusiasm in theStar Warsmovies seemed to dim. However,The Mandalorianhas ignited some new life into the franchise and it might be the perfect timeto start a new trilogy within the universe. Even those who were not fans ofThe Last Jedimust admit Johnson is a talented filmmaker. It is very exciting to think of what he’ll be able to do with a little more freedom in telling hisStar Warsstories.
