As many subscription services often see, there have been plenty of ups and downs forPS Plusthis year. A lot of the free games earlier this year received a mixed or negative reception, with evenPS Plus' ‘Big March’ patternfalling short of past years. At the same time, the launch of PS Plus Extra and Premium has been well-received by fans around the globe. With the continued support of PS Plus Extra and Premium, it’s possible that it gives Game Pass a run for its money, even if Sony believes it’ll take years.

The Essential tier, prior to just a couple of months ago, was the only tier.PS Plusfree games have gone through periods of good games and bad games, with late 2020/early 2021 perhaps being the best the service has ever seen. 2022 has been mixed in comparison.

PS Plus Free Games of 2022 Have Been a Mixed Bag

Without the launch of the PS5 fresh on everyone’s mind and less-than-ideal titles joining the service month after month, 2022 hasn’t been the best year for PS Plus essential yet, and that’s saying something.God of Warfinally graced PS Plus Essentialfor June this year, but it wasn’t the blockbuster it could be given it was a repeat for PS Plus Extra too. Beyond that, each month is about the whole. Very few single games could carry a whole month,God of Warincluded, and it was paired with two titles that had remarkably low reviewsNaruto to Boruto: Shinobi StrikerandNickelodeon All-Star Brawl.

As a whole, PS Plus' free games for July were better, but still featured a repeat and were overshadowed by the release of PS Plus Extra and Premium. It released 18 titles on these two tiers, after all, compared to Essential’s 3. ThePS Plus free games for August 2022, however, is notably one of the best months of the year, with the fans able to grabTony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 Cross-Gen Deluxe Bundle, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, andLittle Nightmares. These are all top-notch additions, but it’s worth noting that the year as a whole would suggest that the final months of the year would be mixed. It would be great to be wrong, but one good apple doesn’t redeem the bunch.

PS Plus Extra and Premium May Become the Focus

As a whole, though, to expect less of PS Plus Essential does not apply to the entire Tiered service now. Sony has already added a ton of beloved games and has confirmed moreAssassin’s CreedandYakuzagames for PS Plus Extra and Premium, too. It may not be the best approach, but it seems safe to say that PS Plus Essential’s loss could be Extra and Premium’s gain. Of course, hindsight is 20/20, and it’ll be interesting to look back on 2022 in 2023 and see how Sony balanced the various tiers of its service.
