Updated April 12th, 2022 by Russ Boswell: There are a lot of great Pokemon found in Pokemon Sword & Shield, but some of them are often overlooked thanks to the abundance of creatures added via the National Pokedex. Many players found themselves grabbing all of their favorites, and developers included a ton of Legendary Pokemon in the Dynamax Adventures subsection within the Crown Tundra DLC. This possibly led some to outright ignore the new Legendary creation in Calyrex, along with its faithful steeds. For those that are looking for a Pokemon that operates a bit differently, they may want to consider this regal pocket monster. To better showcaseCalyrex in Sword & Shieldand how to catch it, as well as its stats and abilities, the following guide has been updated with even more information.

Unlike otherlegendary Pokemon found in the Crown Tundra, the first steps toward finding the King of Bountiful Harvests begin shortly after players get their uniform and Master Ball from Freezington.
The first thing players should do after getting their uniform is to go to Peony’s house and grab the crown from the table inside. Then, players will need to put the crown on the horse-shaped statue outside of the house. This will prompt the first battle with Calyrex, but the Pokemon cannot be caught withany Pokeballduring this battle. As it is a dual grass and psychic-type, it is weak to flying, poison, bug, ghost, fire, ice, and dark-type moves.
After the battle, players can talk to the various villagers in Freezington and go back to talk to Calyrex a few times. Players will eventually need to look for Freezington’s mayor. However, looking for him will reveal that he isn’t home. Players will need to go south through Frostpoint Field into Giant’s Bed. He will be in the center of the area around a few small fields. After talking to him, players will need to read the books on his bookshelf.
Players will need to talk to Calyrex again. When given the prompt for it, players will need to select “carrots.” Then, players will need to talk to a villager by the garden and get carrot seeds that are worth 8 pieces of Dynite Ore. Talking to Calyrex again will give players two choices of where to plant the seeds. If players choose to plant the seeds in the Old Cemetery, they will face the ghost-type legendary Pokemon, Spectrier, as well as getCalyrex in its Shadow Rider form. If players choose to plant the seeds in Snowslide Slope, they will face the ice-type legendary Pokemon, Glastrier, as well as get Calyrex in its Ice Rider form.
After facing eitherlegendary Pokemonand harvesting the carrot, players will need to talk to Calyrex again to get the Radiant Petal. Then, talking to the mayor will let players get the Reins of Unity. The final step is to go to the Crown Shrine and talk to Calyrex before putting the carrot in the basket. This will let players finallycapture Calyrex.
A Look At Calyrex’s Stats And Forms
Calyrex is a unique Pokemon that was introduced in Sword & Shield, with many overlooking the strange Psychic and Grass-type due to its odd appearance and gimmick. Calyrex is fairly middling compared to other strong Pokemon when in its base form but gains a boost to its stats and effectiveness when it joins forces with its faithful steed. Players will also have a choice in what mount Calyrex obtains, giving them a bit more control over what stats and type combination the Legendary creature gains.
Here’s a look at what Calyrex looks like in its base form and what happens when it joins forces with either Spectrier or Glastrier:
Calyrex’s Stats
When Calyrex joins together with Spectrier it gains the Shadow Rider form and drops its Grass typing in favor of Ghost to make it a dual-type Ghost and Psychic Legendary. It also gains a combination of abilities, giving it access to Calyrex’s Unnerve, which keeps foes from eating berries, and Spectrier’s Grim Neigh, which will boost its Special Attack whenever it knocks out an opponent. Shadow Rider Calyrex can benefit from the Timid nature, to help boost its Speed and can learn great moves like Giga Drain, Nasty Plot, Astral Barrage, and Psychic.
Clayrex (Shadow Rider)’s Stats
When Calyrex is paired with Gastrier, it swaps its Grass typing for Ice and combines to become a Psychic and Ice-type Legendary. It still has access to Calyrex’s Unnerve, but also gains Glastrier’s Chilling Neigh, which works just like Spectrier’s Grim Neigh but boosts its Attack stat instead of Special Attack whenever a Pokemon it’s facing is knocked out. It can benefit from the Adamant stat, which will boost its attack further, and can mix and match moves like High Horsepower, Swords Dance, Glacial Lance, and Seed Bomb.
