In theOverwatch 2universe, there are many different kinds of Omnics. Players are familiar with the Bastion units that served as a common enemy for Reinhardt back in his Crusader days, with one going on to be the adorable bird-loving turret that gamers can play as. The OR-15 units that featured in the Uprising mission and inspired Orisa also have memorable designs, as do the more human-like variants such asZenyattaand Mondatta. However, the Gwishin are particularly special.

Overwatch 2fans can see the Gwishin in action during the D.Va animated short “Shooting Star,” with the MEKA squad member shown protecting her people using her high-tech mech. The Gwishin attack relentlessly, and it is made clear to viewers that this is not the first time they have come after D.Va’s home. With the upcoming PvE content, perhaps players will encounter some Gwishin and help D.Va defend Busan during a standout mission.

The Many Attacks of Overwatch’s Gwishin

The Gwishin, or Ghosts, are an interesting enemy because of their programming. For whatever reason, they have attacked South Korea once every few years, failing to be a constant threat but causing panic and fear whenever the time for an assault rolls around. Though theMEKA Squadexists to defend against them, D.Va’s near failure to do so in her short led to extreme anxiety, as it seems like even one Gwishin could devastate her homeland.

Various pieces of lore have touched on this unique sub-faction of Omnics, and the first attack from the Gwishin apparently came in the form of an Omnic Colossus. After being held off, it returned with new forms and abilities, adapting and getting stronger. This concept would guarantee a unique boss fight, and the Gwishin could take one of several forms. Infantry, Flying, Colossus, andBastionunits are all options, and mixing them together for one mission would make perfect sense.

With the Gwishin managing to disable the drone network that originally handled the attacks, human pilots were needed, which is where the MEKA squad andD.Vacame into play. More and more stalemates occurred, with the time between attacks dropping from years to months - and even one week, as shown in the “Shooting Star” short. Soon, it seems like MEKA will not be able to settle for a stalemate, as the Colossus needs to be destroyed once and for all.

With the Gwishin evolving to have squid-like designs thanks to their time in the East China Sea, they would make for a visually diverse addition to the enemy pool. Further, based on theenemy types revealed forOverwatch 2PvEthus far, there is nothing fitting the niche of the flying Gwishin from D.Va’s short. Featuring them in one or multiple missions would lead to unique gameplay, which could be a great motivator for Blizzard when crafting the PvE mode. Perhaps Ramattra could convince the Gwishin to stop attacking one place and to help him with his uprising all over the world, which would show his expertise as a leader while also justifying the appearance of flying Gwishin outside of Busan.

Why the Gwishin exist and continue to attack Korea is anyone’s guess. While it lines up withDoomfist’s reasoning of conflict making humanity stronger, and would make sense as a way for him to test the people of Korea, the timelines do not line up since the attacks have happened for decades. Regardless of why the Gwishin keep challenging MEKA squad, one thing is clear: they would be a lot of fun to fight in some PvE content.

Overwatch 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
