The diverse cast of characters inOne Pieceis one of the best things about the series. Each character has some kind of role to play, which is what makes the series special as a whole. Normally, the characters who possess a great deal of power are able to attract the attention of the fans, but inOne Piece, most characters are so well-written that they are able to captivate the audience regardless of their strength.
When it was confirmed that Buggy would be joining Luffy as one of the Yonko, it was received with mixed reactions as Buggy is nowhere near the level of a Yonko, but there are certain things that make him stand out as a character and why he deserves more credit.

Great Comic Relief
Buggy has mainly been used as a comic reliefcharacter to take off some seriousness of a situation, but at the time of his introduction, Buggy seemed to be the farthest thing from being an amusing character. Buggy was hyped up a lot by the characters, who called him extremely dangerous. Eventually, a few episodes after his debut it became clear that Buggy would not be used as a serious character.
It didn’t take long for Buggy’s antics to win over the fanbase, and it turned him into one of the most adored characters. Aside from playing the role of the major antagonist in the Orange Town arc, Buggy was also involved in the Loguetown arc, where he was on the cusp of killing Luffy. However, as fate would have it Luffy was saved and Buggy was left fuming once again. Not long after the incident, Buggy was captured by the Marines and put inside Impel Down. Luckily, Buggy managed to escape from Impel Down with Luffy’s help. During their escape, Buggy gained a great number of followers, and they considered him to be their savior. Buggy becoming the savior was the result of a big misunderstanding and funnily, it only got worse.

After Luffy’s group finally reached Marineford, they immediately realized that they were in a precarious situation and there was no room for mistakes. In the midst of all the bloodshed, Buggy once again managed to keep things light with his actions. Everything that Buggy did was clearly foolish, but his devotees were too blind to see past the deception. By the end of the arc, Buggy had managed to impress the entire world.
Underserved Promotion
After the Summit War was over, the world was getting ready to enter a new era. One of the many changes that took place in the story waspertaining to the Shichibukai. The Shichibukai lost a few members and the Marines needed to fill the open positions with new candidates. They anointed three new Shichibukai— Trafalgar Law, Edward Weevil, and Buggy. The first candidates had made a name for themselves with their strength, but seeing someone like Buggy there was quite puzzling.

This turned out to be a great opportunity for Buggy, and he used it to the fullest. He started his own delivery service, which became rather successful over time. Buggy employed pirates and mercenaries and sent them on various missions for money. Funnily enough, the trope of Buggy’s underlings being stronger than him continued even after the time skip, as many of Buggy’s workers were more powerful than him. However, due to Buggy’s status as a Shichibukai, they believed that he was extremely strong. In addition to this,being a Shichibukai granted Buggyfull immunity, so he could do as he pleased. The decision to start the mercenary service proved how smart Buggy actually is, as he used his reputation to hire people who were better fighters.
Rise As Yonko
There are several reasons why someone likeBuggy managed to become a Yonko. Firstly, he is the leader of a dangerous group of criminals, who were locked up inside Impel Down. Secondly, Buggy used his intelligence and made a name for himself. He utilized the position of a Shichibukai to the fullest, which is extremely commendable. Thirdly, Buggy is connected to the Roger Pirates and if that secret is out then it would grant a significant boost to his reputation. Also, Buggy’s friendship to Shanks cannot be overlooked by the World Government. Finally,Buggy created the Cross Guild, which is a special organization that consists of Buggy, Crocodile, and Mihawk.
It is obvious that Buggy is not nearly as powerful as either of the two former Shichibukai, but if it was his idea to put bounties on the Marines then he deserves a lot more credit. It is a simple idea, but considering that the pirates outnumber the Marines it is actually quite smart. By putting bounties on all the Marines, Buggy ensured that they would not have an easy time. The Marines will be hounded by all the criminals of the world.
This is the first time that the Marines will become the hunted, which will put a great deal of stress on them and Akainu will have to think twice before making a decision. Also, it will be extremely risky for any Marine to go into a hostile territory by themselves. With all that said, it is important to remember that while Buggy might be used for comic relief, he deserves more credit, and he is truly aOne Piecegreat.
