In many ways,Call of Duty: Warzonehas eclipsed the mainline entries, as a large portion of fans seek out the battle royale format instead ofCall of Duty’s usual brand of multiplayer gameplay. Interest for the campaigns still exists, especially with the story weaved by theModern Warfarereboot, butWarzonehas certainly become one of the greatest focuses for Activision and the developers behindCall of Dutyover the last few years.

Players are able to use a wide range of gadgets inCall of Duty: Warzone, from health-boosting stims to tactical heartbeat sensors.Warzonealso features a handful of killstreaksfor those looking to get an advantage, with the UAV and precision airstrike proving to be some of the most useful. These offerings pale in comparison to those available inCall of Duty’s traditional multiplayer, however, and there’s one piece of equipment fromCoDhistory that could fit right in onWarzone. The Guardian, a killstreak that’s been around sinceBlack Ops 2, could be a game changer if it was added toWarzone.

Call of Duty’s Guardian Explained

Call of Dutyhas introduced a wide range of killstreaks over the years. From the counter-UAV that obscures opponents' mini-maps, to the War Machine grenade launcher that can clear out rooms with ease, there’s been no shortage of ways to change the tides of battle. InBlack Ops 2,developer Treyarchintroduced a new killstreak that would offer a new way to get a leg up on the competition. That killstreak is the Guardian, a piece of equipment that has historically required a few kills to acquire, as it can offer a decisive advantage when used to its maximum potential.

The Guardian takes the form of a large dish that stands on a tall base. This dish emits a wave of microwave radiation that slows movement and gradually damages enemies, making it an excellent way to control choke points and generally slow the momentum of the opposing team. Since the release ofBlack Ops 2, the Guardian has gone on to appear inBlack Ops 3andCall of Duty: Mobile, and it will soon make its long-awaited return inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. This newest version makes some changes to the classic killstreak, but it could make it a useful piece of equipment inWarzone.

How The Guardian Could Affect Call of Duty: Warzone

The main utility of the Guardian has always been area denial, giving players a chance to pick off enemies as their movement is compromised. This would make the Guardian a highly advantageous tool inWarzone, as rapid, decisive movement is essential especially as the map gets tighter and tighter. Even if there are no choke points to take advantage of, placing it in the middle of a firefight just to slow down enemies for a moment could be enough to get the job done. For that reason, the Guardian would likely be highly difficult to acquire, but it could turn intothe most useful piece of equipment inWarzone.

Modern Warfare 3is already sowing the seeds for the Guardian’s inclusion inWarzone, as the killstreak will no longer damage enemies and only slow them down. Considering how overpowered it might be inWarzoneif it also damaged players, this move makes sense, but it still remains to be seen if the Guardian will be added at all. Whether the Guardian is added or not,Call of Dutyis preparing for a new erathat’s likely to give fans old and new something to enjoy.

Call of Duty: Warzoneis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
