Back in 2018, Square Enix releasedOctopath Traveler, which brings players back to the classic turn-based RPG experience that put the company in the spotlight decades ago. Given its nostalgic feel, immersive story, and interesting characters,Octopath Travelerreceived glowing reviews and is widely considered asone of the best RPG games of 2018.
Now, for those who still haven’t triedOctopath Traveler, Best Buy just recently dropped the game’s price, making it a must-buy for any RPG fan. At the moment, the game’s Switch version is available for $44.99, which is 25% cheaper than its initial price of $59.99. While the discount is not massive, it is worth noting that Best Buy’s price is one of the lowest right now, given that most retailers, including the Nintendo eShop, still offer the game at full price.

To the uninitiated,Octopath Travelerfollows the stories of eight heroes as they journey across the land of Osterra. The game sports a graphical aesthetic known as HD-2D, which pays homage to the retro Super NES style visuals but combined with high-definition textures and character sprites. After its release to the Switch back in 2018,Octopath Travelerwas ported to the PC in 2019 and wasrecently released for the Google Stadia last April.
Given its critical and commercial success, Square Enix confirmed back in 2019 thata prequel and sequel are in the worksfor mobile devices and consoles respectively. The prequel is titledOctopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, which will take place several years prior to the events of the first game. The mobile prequel was supposed to release back in 2019, but Square Enix announced that the game will be delayed into 2020. On the other hand, Square Enix noted that the console sequel will take a bit more time, and still does not have any release date.
Earlier this month, aSuper Smash Bros. Ultimateevent, which ran from July 10-15, andfeatured a crossover withOctopath Traveler. In celebration ofOctopath Traveler’ssecond anniversary on the Nintendo Switch,Super Smash Bros. Ultimatehosted an event to celebrate the occasion that added four Spirits to the game, with each one consisting of battles against two characters. These include battles between Olberic and Primrose, Tressa and Cyrus, Alfyn and Therion, and H’aanit and Ophilia. Unfortunately, it appears that there are no plans to permanently addOctopath Travelercharacters toSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, given that the RPG game is no longer a Switch exclusive.
