The success ofOctopath Travelerfollowing its 2018 release ushered in a resurgence of 2D RPGs from Square Enix with the developer doubling down on new and classic role-players. Square Enix has since released fully remastered versions of the original sixFinal Fantasygames with thePixel Remasterseries alongside the “HD-2D” series receiving itsnewest entry withTriangle Strategyin March. But despiteOctopath’s success and recognition at awards shows, Square Enix has yet to announce a proper sequel.

Octopath Traveler’s story did not end with the original RPG, however, as 2020 saw the Japanese release ofOctopath Traveler: Champions of the Continentas a free-to-play mobile game. Rather than serving as a direct follow-up toOctopath,Champions of the Continentplays out as a prequel telling the story of three new characters within the world of Osterra. With Square Enix confirming a Western release forChampions of the Continentearlier this year, the newest update from the developer officially announces the opening of pre-registrations for the game.

A new trailer forChampions of the Continentreleased Wednesday morning revealsOctopath Travelerfans can now pre-register for the mobile game on both the App Store and Google Play Store. The short video re-introduces players toOctopath’s gorgeous 2D artstylewhile giving a glimpse into the mobile-optimized UI in the game, promising a “console experience optimized for Mobile.” The trailer also teases the game’s worldwide release window withOctopath Traveler: Champions of the Continentset to launch in Summer 2022.

The mobile-optimized version comes as Square Enix has placed a heavy focus on bringing more of its franchises to mobile devices. The previously mentionedFinal Fantasy Pixel Remastersaw all of its releases come to both PC and mobile devices at launch.Kingdom Heartshas also seen multiple mobile releases throughout its history with Square EnixannouncingKingdom Hearts: Missing Linkearlier this year. Square Enix’s upcoming remaster ofRomancing SaGa: Minstrel Songwas also confirmed for mobile devices.

WhileOctopath Travelerhas yet to receive a true sequel, the game’s success has led to Square Enix officially adopting its HD-2D style for several recent and upcoming games. Alongside the recently releasedTriangle Strategy, Square Enix has confirmed that theLive A Liveremake releasing next month will shareOctopath’s iconic visual style. Square Enix also announced thatDragon Quest 3would receive a remasterin the same HD-2D aesthetic. Despite not being a direct follow-up,Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continentwill offer fans another look into the world of Osterra.
