Since this is a My Nintendo reward, fans looking to get it must have a Nintendo account and enough Platinum points. The reward is a printable reverse alternate box art based onthe SNES box art ofSuper Mario RPG, obtained after redeeming 30 Platinum points. This reverse cover has the old 3D artwork of Mario, Bowser, Princess Peach, and Exor, with Bowser’s castle in the background. To complete the retro throwback, the SNES branding, old ESRB rating label, and tag lines are on this reverse art cover as well.

This box art was exclusive to the original SNES Western release ofSuper Mario RPG, while the Japanese box art went with something more minimalist. The Japanese Super Famicom box art had an all-white background with renders ofSuper Mario RPG’s party memberson it, including Yoshi, despite him having a limited role inSMRPG. The Nintendo Switch remake calls back to this older cover, featuring a similar minimalist box art that has Mario’s party over a white background andSuper Mario RPG’s logo. This reward should be a good alternative for those who don’t like the more minimalist presentation of the current box art.

This isn’t the only way Nintendo has been connecting with older gamers with this remake, asJapanese copies ofSuper Mario RPGcame with a physical game manual, based on the Super Nintendo manuals from the ’90s. Gaming manuals are mostly a thing of the past now, but are still something sought after by older gamers. This My Nintendo reward gives the more nostalgic fans a piece of the past while they play the remake.
