One aspect of NetherRealm Studios’Mortal Kombatfranchise that has helped it stand apart is its variety of guest fighters, with the latest entryMortal Kombat 11featuring DC Comics' Joker, Image Comics' Spawn, the Terminator T-800, andRoboCop as of theAftermathDLC expansion. Of the most-desired characters to join that roster is Ash Williams from theEvil Deadfranchise, but it seems there might be trouble getting that crossover together.
Rumors and speculation about Williams taking part inMortal Kombat 11have been around since it released thanks to data found within the game’s code, but the possibility ofEvil DeadDLC dissipated whenthat code was removed inAftermathand actor Bruce Campbell denied any rumors on Twitter. The waters became even murkier thanks to an interview Friday with NetherRealm Creative Director Ed Boon on Victor Lucas' podcast Vic’s Basement, where Boon addresses questions about his inclusion by saying he wishes he could comment and “perhaps” he’ll be able to in the future.

Given the presence and removal of content related toEvil DeadinMortal Kombat 11’s code, this response seems to suggest there were plans that have been scrapped. However, Boon does not go deeper into the subject here, so for now fans of the iconic horror series will have to wait and see if more will be divulged sometime soon.
The 25-minute interview does have a lot more forMortal Kombat 11players to hear, including Boon’s confirmation that he hears all therequests to add fan-favorite character Mileenainto the game and that his personal favorite guest character from any title in the series wasAlien’s Xenomorph inMortal Kombat X. He also teases other projects in development at NetherRealm Studios that players won’t see or get to play for years.
There’s a decent chance that whatever big projects NetherRealm has in the works, it will be working to take advantage of next-generation console technology. During an interview with Geoff Keighley earlier this year, Boon talked about how people are underestimating the potential ofreduced load times on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
With or without Ash Williams, the future ofMortal Kombat 11still appears to be strong even without live events. The fighting game community has been shaken up with the cancellation of EVO Online afterNetherRealm, Capcom, and others pulled outfollowing sexual misconduct allegations against its organizer Joey Cuellar.
Mortal Kombat 11is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
