The Real-World History Behind The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
In the 1980s, the media businessman Haim Saban had an idea to take footage from a popular Japanese kids’ show and work it around an original story and set of characters. Saban’s initial pilots didn’t gain much traction, but eventually, in 1992, his revised pilot ended up being picked up by Fox Kids. This revised pilot used footage fromthe popularSuper Sentaiseries, which was dubbed over by American voice actors. Additional scenes of American actors out of theSuper Sentaisuits were also used to forge an original story. And thusPower Rangerswas born.
The veryfirstPower Rangersserieswas titledMighty Morphin Power Rangers, which followed a similar approach to Saban’s original pilot, using footage fromSuper Sentai’sKyōryū Sentai Zyurangerseries. The first season ofMighty Morphin Power Rangersaired in 1993 and ran until 1994, consisting of an impressive 60 episodes in total. Obviously,Mighty Morphin Power Rangersbecame a colossal hit, receiving two more seasons that ran until 1995, selling countless toys and other pieces of merchandise, and spawning an array of futurePower Rangersseries.

The In-Universe Lore Behind The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
For a kids’ show,Mighty Morphin Power Rangersgets pretty convoluted quite fast. The show opens up with a team of astronauts cracking open a mysterious alien container that ends up releasing the evil sorceress Rita Repulsa and her army of colorful alien minions. As Rita Repulsa heads towards Earth,the ancient wizard Zordonawakens and calls upon five Californian teenagers to become a super-powered team of martial artists known as the Power Rangers. This first line-up of Power Rangers includes Kimberly Hart, Zack Taylor, Jason Lee Scott, Billy Cranston, and Trini Kwan, who become the Pink, Black, Red, Blue, and Yellow Rangers respectively.
Along with superhuman strength and agility, the Power Rangers are given an arsenal of high-tech, ancient weaponry, and a full suite of powerful vehicles known as Zords. Each of these Zords is based on a different dinosaur or other prehistoric creature, such as a Triceratops, sabertooth tiger, and mastodon. These Zords can combine tocreate a Megazord, a giant, walking robotic sentinel.
