Summary
The long-rumoredLEGO Horizon Adventureswas finally unveiled at Summer Game Fest, and it’s no small offering. With incredible graphical production value, especially for a LEGO game, it’s great to seeLEGO Horizon Adventuresbring varied customization into the fold.
There have been manyleaks surroundingLEGO Horizon Adventures, with its reveal more of a certainty than a surprise. While initial rumors pointed towards an announcement happening May 30th during PlayStation’s State of Play event, this panned out to not be the case. However, Summer Game Fest picked up the slack with a grand unveiling;LEGO Horizon Adventureswas used to kick off the whole event. The action-adventure title looks to mix the classic platforming and collectathon elements familiar to TT’s LEGO projects, all with a fresh coat of paint.

LEGO Horizon Adventures Is Bringing Back Character Customization To LEGO Games
LEGO Horizon Adventureslooks like a beautifully-realized, family-friendly take on Sony’s excellentHorizonseries of games. However, there’s one element evident in the trailer material that will excite LEGO fans specifically. Both of the games' protagonists, Aloy and Varl, can access a vast wardrobe of cosmetics. This isn’t quite the character customization veteran LEGO fans will remember, striking a different chord when compared to LEGO’sStar WarsorBatmangames, but it will nonetheless scratch that old itch.
Aloy And Varl Can Get Quite The Makeover
As part of the official screenshots available alongsidethe announcement ofLEGO Horizon Adventures, Sony released one that stands apart from the rest. This screenshot, showing Aloy and Varl standing side-by-side with costume options available, does more to show the title’s UI than other promotional shots. In this area, it seems as if players will be able to deck the two characters out in a number of costumes. It seems as if the wardrobe is divided into different themes, with Aloy’s side set to a ‘Horizon Adventures’ theme while Varl’s player is browsing a ‘Trends’ section. The latter casts a far wider net, including one costume that looks somewhat similar to the iconic LEGO character Johnny Thunder.
This is all in stark contrast toLEGO Skywalker Saga’s decision to ditch customization, which upset many longtime fans prior to that game’s release. In general,Skywalker Sagawas a sendoff to LEGO’s history with Traveler’s Tales that did a lot differently from other TT Lego Games. However, it seems as if those last-minute structure shifts aren’t sticking around;LEGO Horizon Adventures' is continuing the trends ofLEGO 2K DriveandLEGO Fortnite, both of which favor customization and player agency. Moreover,Adventureswill also be keeping up with the entirely brick-built world seen in the other two.

LEGO Horizon Adventures Will Sport Hub Customization
In addition to character cosmetics,LEGO Horizon Adventureswill include hub customization. Players will be able to unlock new structures to decorate the village of Mother’s Heart, including many that go wildly against the more serious aspects of a typicalHorizongame. The trailer includes upgrades like a ferris wheel, a roller coaster, a disco floor, and much more, all of which match perfectly the game’s silly outfits and sillier tone.
This is also in conjunction withmany moves made byLEGO Fortnite; it seems as if LEGO wants to really lean into sandboxes and player creativity, opening up the possibility for games more in the vein ofLEGO WorldsthanLEGO Star Wars. The option to add new structures in the world, which look to be either unlockable or available through collectible currency, is also resonant withLEGO Dimensions. Regardless of root or intent, the feature looks like a fun way for LEGO to set the game apart from mainlineHorizon.
