Updated on Jun 02, 2025, by Mina Smith:As more information about Inscryption’s twisted and convoluted story comes to light, it seemed more and more imperative to begin updating some articles to add more details. The nature of the failure object and how his character fits into the world of Inscryption is important to the plot, and so adding more information about this goopy friend was important. Hopefully, all new players will want to pick up this “unusable” bottle in their first playthrough after learning everything about him and how he can help them to complete Act 1.

The Failure Bottle In Inscryption
The Failure bottle or the useless item is part of Leshy’sdeck-building card gamethat players have to partake in. Players can only use items during combat, and each item has a different use. But the Failure bottle doesn’t seem to have any listed uses in the game; its page in the rulebook just says it can’t be used. But players, especially first-time players, should still definitely pick this item when it comes up during the backpack item grabs.

When players try to use the bottle in combat, Leshy says, “I am serious. You cannot use that.” He has been warning players this whole time that the item isn’t unusable, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone when he takes it away without it granting the player any special powers or help in combat.
Afterward, he takes the goop-filled jar and places it over on the table next to the Squirrel statue when players can usethe Caged Wolf Statue after breaking it out. If players get up from the table, they can head over to that spot and have a chat with the bottle.

Talking to the Bottle of Goo in Inscryption
In later chapters ofInscryption, players find out who this person is. However, for now, all they will know is that it is a person that has been liquified and is currently hanging out inside of the bottle. The person appears to be in a lot of pain, but that doesn’t stop him from giving the player hints on how to proceed. This item is one of thebest tips for new players ofInscryptioninside of the game.
If a player is stuck in any puzzle, ask the goop man for advice. He may be listed as a failure, and players are prompted not to let the poor creature out of his prison, but he is actually very helpful to anyone stuck in Act 1. While the Failure won’t be able to help players make thebest possible deck forInscryption’s Act 1, he can certainly help with any of the puzzles located inside the room.

In Act 2, players get to finally meet the other Scrybes of the game as the title is finally reset and wrested from Leshy’s control. Nowthe third talking card inInscryption, the Stunted Wolf aka the Scrybe Manificus, is returned to his native location along with all of his students. Each student is locked in their own hellish dungeon, from the student failure who was locked in a sensory deprivation room for years to the one that was turned into a big puddle of green goo for his failure. This student, named Goobert, was transmuted into goo for not living up to Manificus' standards and now lives to give the player clues and hopes to someday be included in his master’s deck of cards.
