Hugh Jackman’s legacy as Wolverine in theX-Menfilms is one for the ages. Having played the character for over twenty years, Jackman and Wolverine are closely associated. However, according to Jackman, playing Wolverine damaged his vocal cords.

Jackman has played Wolverine since 2000’sX-Men.Following Wolverine’s demise in 2017’sLogan,and several statements from the actor’s camp, it was thought that Jackman retired from the role before it was revealed thatJackman is returning as Wolverine inDeadpool 3.Jackman’s return to the role has made many fans eager to see what the celebrated actor has up his sleeve, and its excited fans who have wanted Wolverine in the MCU for many years.

During an episode of the BBC’sFront Row,Jackman shared information about the physical damage sustained by playing Wolverine. “My falsetto is not as strong as it used to be and that I directly put down to some of the growling and yelling,” Jackman revealed. “My voice teacher in drama school would’ve been horrified by some of the things I did [inWolverine].” Jackman further revealed that, though his educational background had provided him with techniques that would prevent him from damaging his voice, he did not put them to use during his time as Wolverine.

Though Jackman is probably most well-known for his action-packed roles, he has an extensive history in musical theater and other musical productions. The actor has also hosted the Tony Awards multiple times (three of these ceremonies occurred sequentially over three years). Having starred in films such asThe Greatest ShowmanandLes Miserables,Jackman’s voice is integral to his career.

Jackman has previously discussed the physical demands of the role.Jackman has a few months to channel Wolverineand get into tip-top shape. When he played Wolverine more consistently, he had to stay in that shape for extended periods. This process is arduous for multiple reasons, including the fact that many actors are pressured into staying dehydrated for shirtless scenes (so that their muscles are more prominent).

There’s no doubt thatDeadpool 3will be demanding, but Jackman seems eager to return to the Wolverine role. His determination and love for the character have been shown, time and time again, to be an iron-clad commitment. Now that Jackman is working with professional voice teachers again, his vocal cords will hopefully be taken care of.
