TheHarry Potteruniverse is full of video games, movies, and more. That includes a trading card game from Wizards of the Coast from 2001 that has long gone out of print. It’s astonishing to say nothing has filled that void since, but nothing has – until now. IntroducingHarry Potter: Magic Awakened, an MMO card collecting game developed in partnership between Warner Bros. Games and NetEase Games.Harry Potter: Magic Awakenedwill be coming to iOS and Android devices later this year.
InHarry Potter: Magic Awakened, players will take on the role of new wizards and witches that have been invited toHogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizards. Not only will they put together decks of magical spells and abilities with which to take on other players, but they’ll experience a magical story involving typical Hogwarts functions including the sorting hat, classes, shopping in Diagon Alley, and attending the school’s Dueling Club. Suffice to say, it’ll be rife withHarry Potterthematic content.

Like with otherdigital CCGs,Harry Potter: Magic Awakenedwill task players with collecting cards and organizing decks in a strategic fashion. Then players will have to tactically play their cards against their opponents, reacting turn by turn with spells and charms that can combine into game-winning sequences. Not only will players be able to duel each other, but they’ll also be tasked with non-competitive challenges of increasing difficulty.
To be fair,Harry Potter: Magic Awakenedisn’t an entirely new game. NetEase first released it in China, Macau, and Taiwan, ensuring that the western release of the game is polished and ready for a new audience. Overseas,Harry Potter: Magic Awakenedeven managed to climb to the #1 position on iOS revenue charts. It was an incredible success, though western markets are competitive in a unique way for CCG games.
This newHarry PotterCCG is, obviously, looking to capitalize off of the strength of theHarry Potterbrand. Even the game’s announcement trailer for the west doesn’t actually include gameplay. It’s a cinematic trailer filled with references from theHarry Potterbooks. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, butHarry Potterfans shouldn’t expect more than a mobile-focused CCG and all that entails from the game.
What’s lacking from today’s announcement is a release window forHarry Potter: Magic Awakened. No date is confirmed, as yet. InterestedHarry Potterfanscan visit the game’s official website and pre-register, however, which includes some exclusive in-game rewards. Expect to hear Potter: Magic Awakenedin the months to come.
