The existence of a remaster of the iconic first-person shooterGoldeneye 007has been rumored for some time. There’s even been substantial evidence of its existence shared online, with the remaster’s Xbox achievements leaking early. It’s almost enough to stop callingGoldeneye 007a rumor, except for the fact it has yet to be announced. That may be changing soon, though, as a leaker is hinting at an incoming announcement for what could be theGoldeneye 007remaster.The leak comes from VideoGamesChronicle editor Andy Robinson, and given the reliability of the source, it’s odd to consider it a rumor. However, Robinson decided to share his news in an unspecific manner, leaving room for other possibilities. What Robinson says is that he wouldn’t be surprised if “a certain super spy returns in the next few weeks.” Given the diverse range of rumors already surrounding aGoldeneye 007remaster, it is the first and most likely possibility for what Robinson is talking about.RELATED:GoldenEye 007 Remaster Achievements Appear OnlineGiven the generic idea of a super spy and the surprising diversity ofspies in video games, though, it’s easy to see how Robinson could be talking about something else entirely. There are a surprisingly large amount of spies that video game fans would love to see return, after all.

The replies to Robinson’s tweet offer up a good number of joking possibilities. One responder mentionsClub Penguin: Elite Penguin Forcefor the Nintendo DS, another linked the box art for EA’sJames Pond: Underwater Agent. There are even games actually named Super Spy, like SNK’sThe Super Spyfor the Neo Geo. There are also plenty of legitimate alternatives, however. A newSplinter Cellis known to be in development, andPerfect Darkhas a new game in development, too. It also wouldn’t be surprising to see a new collection for something likeSly Cooper.

With all that said, the remaster ofGoldeneye 007remains the most likely possibility.James Bondis the most iconic of super spies, after all, and a game announcement for it has to have been coming for some time. The other possibilities, while not outside the realm of reality, seem unlikely to be announced or discussed in February or March, of all times.

What’s known about theGoldeneyeremasteris that it would strictly be a remaster with basic improvements to UI. It wouldn’t be a substantial remake, though while multiplayer details are unavailable, it would assumedly work online with matchmaking. If the leak is true, official details regardingGoldeneye 007could be coming in the next several weeks.
