Warner Bros. owns a lot of IPs. As shown in the sequel toSpace Jam, where characters likeRick & Mortywere appearing alongsideKing Kong, there’s a diverse range of shows, movies, games, and more under the WB banner. With ideas around the multiverse taking over movie theaters after the release ofSpider-Man: No Way Homeand the hype around theupcomingDoctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, it seems that the multiverse concept will be making its way to videogames soon withMultiVersus.
MultiVersusseemed like quite the odd creation when it was initially revealed. The platform fighting game combines a whole host of characters most people would never have expected to see sharing a screen, such as Jake the Dog fromAdventure Time, Arya Stark fromGame of Thrones, and even Shaggy fromScooby-Doo. Shaggy especially appears to be an interesting character, as Warner Bros. has confirmed “Ultra Instinct Shaggy” as canon. WithMultiVersusclearly in its early stages of development though, fans assumed it would be a long way off before they saw gameplay, but thanks to a recent leak, five minutes of early footage has shown up online.

Now deleted from YouTube, the gameplay footage forMultiVersuscan still be found online and shows multiple characters facing off in a few of the game’s maps. There’s Jake the Dog vs Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman vs Garnet fromSteven Universeamong other matchups. The footage likely stems from a tech demo that was planned last month forMultiVerus, and shows how the game is inspired by other platform fighting titles likeSuper Smash BrosandBrawlhalla.
With combos, a diverse roster of characters, and plenty of maps for players to beat up their favorite WB characters around,MultiVersus’gameplay leak does show it to be a promising looking fighting game. It seems that from theMultiVerustech testas well that WB Games is ensuring that the gameis not just an excuse to throw plenty of recognizable characters in a game, as players invited to the demo were asked primarily for feedback on the upcoming game.
With so manycharacters already announced forMultiVersus, and even more to come, balancing them all is likely to be a major priority moving forward. Hopefully, with the gameplay already leaking online, fans will be able to see more of the upcoming title going forwards as it is still aiming for a 2022 release date, and will be free-to-play from launch.
MultiVersusis still in development and looking to release 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
