Following the critical and commercial success ofElden Ring, FromSoftware is going to have to step up its game to iterate and improve upon this very strong foundation with its next title. While there are a lot of lessons the developer can learn from the success ofElden Ring, there is one wacky feature that FromSoftware shouldn’t overlook when designing its next Soulslike experience. The Mimic’s Veil item adds a level of surprise and often humorous situations, putting a twist onElden Ring’s PvP multiplayer formula that needs to be replicated in the game’s successor.
Multiplayer PvP and invasions have been a staple mechanic of FromSoftware’s Soulslike titles since the originalDemon Soulsand offer players the opportunity to enter the world of another player in an attempt to kill them for a reward. Players engaging in the mechanic also run the risk of being invaded themselves and must be prepared to face off against other players in combat at a moment’s notice. While each FromSoftware Soulslike has featured this mechanic in some way,Elden Ring’s Mimic’s Veilitem made the surprising nature of being invaded all the more stressful as invaders could be disguised as commonly found objects.

Elden Ring’s Mimic’s Veil Needs to Return in FromSoftware’s Follow-Up Title
Players looking to participate inElden Ring’s PvP systemwill need some form of Bloody Finger or Duelist’s Furled Finger to access the multiplayer mode, but they might also want to make sure they have the Mimic’s Veil for a more stealthy and comical approach to combat. The Mimic’s Veil can be used to disguise the player as a nearby object for a cost of 6 FP, and enemies will not take notice of them as long as they remain motionless. This item adds a level of hilarity to PvP invasions as players can sneak up on their unsuspecting target while appearing as something like a tree or crate.
Players can find the Mimic’s Veil inElden Ring’s Stormveil Castlejust above where the Grafted Scion enemy is located. As such, players can access this item fairly early in the game, but its accompanying item, Crepus’s Vial which eliminates all sound made from footsteps, isn’t found until players complete an assassination quest from Volcano Manor much later in the game. The combination of these two items can make players intent on invading opponents hilariously incognito while also giving them a distinct advantage in getting the drop on their target.
There have been some pretty funny instances ofElden Ringplayers using the Mimic’s Veil, with some attempts being more successful than others. The next FromSoftware game could up the ante for this type of item by allowing players to mimic more than just inanimate objects and branch out to let them disguise themselves as animals or other non-hostile creatures, or even let them take on the appearance of an NPC character or enemy. The thought of a player invading another’s world disguised as the classic FromSoftware character Patches is both hilarious and frightening as no one would trust any object or character they encounter in the game.
This next game could even follow up onElden Ring’s Colosseum mechanicthat was added in the December 2022 update and allow multiple invaders to exist throughout the entire world of the game. Opening up this system in such a way could create some extreme hide-and-seek opportunities with players using Mimic’s Veils in a free-for-all setting. As this type of multiplayer interaction is currently limited to Colosseum areas inElden Ring, expanding upon this concept would likely have to wait until a sequel, which further demonstrates why a Mimic’s Veil-like item needs to exist in the follow-up title.
Elden Ringis available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
