FromSoftwarehas a much longer track record than most fans realize in 2021. As a studio, they’ve been producing popular games since the 90s, long before the concept forDemon’s Soulseven reached the studio. Some series' from the studio are still getting current support with new games, and fans appreciate the callbacks to old games in their new franchises.

Their boss fights are easily a highlight of the games. However, while the Soulsborne games have crafted several great climactic battles, other studios and franchises should also be commended for developing amazing boss battles of their own.
Updated on August 03, 2025 by Ritwik Mitra:The Soulsborne games are some of the best action-adventure games that anyone can get their hands on. These games are mostly known for their incredible boss fights, to the point where every list of amazing boss fights is populated with Soulsborne games. However, other franchises have also developed amazing boss battles of their own, with the best of the bunch being mentioned below.

15The Stranger From God Of War (2018)
For the most part,God of Warabsolutely deliveredwhen it came to the awesome nature of its boss fights. Each battle was an epic spectacle where players had to give their all to defeat these imposing foes.
The first fight against The Stranger — later revealed to be Baldur — is especially notable for upping the ante when it came to the epic nature of the game’s battles. The fight was a blast and served as one of the many encounters against the game’s central antagonist.

14Phalanx From Shadow Of The Colossus
To be frank, each and every encounter fromShadow of the Colossuscould’ve made its way on this list. The game is essentially a boss rush that is a ton of fun to get through… although the ending makes players realize just how unnecessary and brutal their actions were.
Phalanx is easilya highlight ofShadow of the Colossus. Any fight where Agro plays a key role in the game is great, and watching Wander hit the boss' gas sacs to bring him down before riding side-by-side with Agro and leaping on it to inflict damage is a ton of fun indeed.

13Mr. Freeze From Batman: Arkham City
TheBatman Arkhamseries has been pretty hit-or-miss when it comes to its bosses. Thankfully, the second game in the seriesupped the ante when it came to the showdowns against these powerful enemies.
The fight against Mr. Freeze was especially brilliant. This glorified Predator encounter had players mixing up their strategies as they stalked this foe and slowly whittled down his suit’s durability until he was finally put in a vulnerable state.

12Photoshop Flowey From Undertale
Undertaleis one of the best indie games of all time. Toby Fox became a worldwide sensation overnight with the advent of this game, which is absolutely spectacular in so many beautiful ways.

The final fight against Photoshop Flowey in the Neutral Route is easily one of the most engaging final boss battles of all time. Flowey messes around with the game itself and ensures that players will have their minds boggled until the very end when they finally manage to deal with his immense onslaught.
11Lavos From Chrono Trigger
Chrono Triggeris an incredible JRPG, with its final encounter being one of the most memorable final boss fights on the SNES. Players have to go through multiple renditions of this boss that echo all the other high-profile encounters they had to deal with over the course of the series.
The end result is a highly engaging boss fight that forces the player to recall all the weaknesses and strategies they employed for each encounter. It ends with a fight against the true form of Lavos, which is no joke.

10Seath From King’s Field
These lesser-known series includeKing’s FieldandArmored Core, which are more popular in Japan due to smaller localization efforts in the west. If Fromsoftware isknown for anything besides the difficulty of their games, it’s their attention to detail in their lore building and enemies. The bosses of Fromsoftware’s games have been fantastic since their earliest games.
Seath is a dragon from theKing’s Fieldseries' third installment (second in the US) whose name is also used in theDarkSoulsseries forSeath The Scaleless. Seath is a dragon with immense physical power that imposes himself over the battlefield and the player. He marches back and forth, swiping at the player, and unleashes magic blasts that can be hard to avoid.

The inclusion of Seath as an Easter Egg in later games just goes to show the amount of detail and love for the character FromSoftware put into realizing him in their 1996 game. He’s one of the more unique bosses and memorable for fans, even though the gameplay ofKing’s Fielddidn’t make for many creative boss fights.
9N-WGIX/v From Armored Core
This is a fightfromArmored Core: Verdict Daythat fans couldn’t forget if they tried. The fight sports flashy phase shifts, a deserted battle arena, and captures the true atmosphere of a dual between men putting everything on the line. TheArmored Coreseries deals with the relationships between man and war, and the ethics of it all when making hard decisions, and this fight is the culmination of all of those things.
The first phase involves avoiding projectiles and staying out of range of large energy blasts, which isn’t what’s immediately expected from the N-WGIX/v’s appearance. Once the energy shields are depleted, the player can swoop in with physical blade attacks. After clearing the first phase, it’s all about maintaining distance and using projectiles to damage the enemy.

8Michizane From Otogi: Myth Of Demon
Michizane is the final boss of the obscure FromSoftware gameOtogi: Myth of Demon. He’s a standard humanoid boss with 3 separate forms, and Michizane is the final form. The boss mainly floats high above the player, making him hard to reach and land solid combos on with a standard sword. It’s recommended to change equipment around to make the character more mobile and able to hit airborne enemies.

As a final boss, Michizane can be sort of underwhelming but his difficulty is what sets him apart. He’s very difficult to track and take down, making for a satisfying finish once he’s defeated. The game seems to take a lot fromNinjaGaidengames that work similarly and it truly shows during this godly final battle.
7The Fight House From Metal Wolf Chaos
Metal Wolf Chaosis a hilarious experience of a video game that plays on the grandiosity of America’s patriotism and does it well. Toward the end of the game, the player takes on the White House which is covered in battle armor and cannons and nicknamed the Fight House. Unlike theArmored Coreseries, most of the boss fights in this game are not giant fighting robots, but rather large military vehicles like tanks and helicopters.
This fight is iconic for how outlandish it is, coupled with its surprising difficulty. The Fight House has two stages, one with armor, and one without, as the player tries to do what’s right for democracy. There’s not much else to say about how ridiculous this fight is without trying it for oneself.

6Mobile Armor Hawk Unit From Metal Wolf Chaos
Another boss fromMetal Wolf Chaos, the Mobile Armor Hawk Unit is the only boss fight against another combat robot in the game. This fight is extra special because the pilot of the Hawk Unit is actually the Vice President of the United States. The Vice President is the main antagonist who foils the main character again and again throughout the game, so this fight has emotional weight to it.
The fight is more standard than others in the game since there’re fewer gimmicks, but what makes it memorable is the setting. The player fights the Vice President in a casino filled with slot machines to obscure the battleground, kind of like the gravestones in the fight againstGascoigne inBloodborne. The music and ambiance of it all contrast the climactic fight itself, giving the player a conflicted feeling, probably similar to what the main character is feeling.
