Gunbladesare just one of the concepts thatFinal Fantasyis so famous for and have arguably helped put the franchise on the map for gamers around the world. The titles are known for their striking visuals and strong world-building, and gunblades, with their unique looks and abilities, are a massive part of this.

However, there are quite a number of gunblades that players and non-playable characters alike can make use of in theFinal Fantasygames. With so many to choose from, it can be hard to know which are the best. So, this list covers some ofFinal Fantasy’smost powerful gunblades.

9Lion Heart

Lion Heart is just as cool as it is powerful. Generally sporting a massive, blue blade and ornate handle featuring a winged lion, Lion Heart appears in a number ofFinal Fantasygames and belongs to Squall Leonhart, one of the characters with the richest lore in the franchise.

It’s worth noting that Lion Heart’s appearance does vary from game to game; in some titles, for example, it’s golden, rather than blue. Regardless, this is easily one of the franchise’s best gunblades and can also be used inFinal Fantasy VIIIto unlock Squall Leonhart’s best finishing moves, though it is tricky to obtain as a result of the rare materials needed to craft it.

8Hyperion

Like many of the gunblades in theFinal Fantasyseries, Hyperion’s appearance varies from game to game. One constant, though, is that the weapon is Seifer’s signature (in addition tohis complex personality), and is one of the franchise’s most powerful gunblades more generally.

InFinal Fantasy VIII, Hyperion offers 12 Strength and a Hit Rate of 255. The trigger button can also be used to enhance Hyperion’s damage if timed correctly with Seifer striking the enemy. All in all, this is a formidable weapon, and it’s pretty daunting to come up against when players face off against Hyperion.

7Omega Weapon

The mysterious Omega Weapon is a powerful dual-mode gunblade that makes appearances throughout several titles in theFinal Fantasyfranchise, as well as being the character Lightning’s strongest weapon.

InFinal Fantasy XIII, for instance, the weapon has a range of powers, including being able to fire off bullets or electric beams. Its actual base stats can vary, though, depending on the original gunblade that is upgraded into the Omega Weapon. Nevertheless, it is, as mentioned previously, one of the most powerful gunblades in the whole series, and is well worth obtaining in the games.

6Punishment

In addition to being one of Squall Leonhart’s most powerful gunblades (with Squall beingone of the franchise’s most powerful characters), Punishment is easily one of the series' best looking weapons, too. Players can obtain it from shops or junk shops by trading in a variety of materials, and, inFinal Fantasy VIII, it boasts 24 attack and a whopping hit rate of 255%.

Some players actually mix Punishment up with the Twin Lance, another gunblade. So, it’s important to note here that the two aren’t the same weapons; while they look very similar, Punishment is actually far more powerful.

5Heirsbane

Heirsbane is easily one of the most elegant-looking weapons in the wholeFinal Fantasyfranchise, and it’s an incredibly powerful gunblade, to boot. This style of gunblade is the one used by the Garlean Empire, and Gaius van Baelsar uses Heirsbane in particular.

With its trigger on the handle, Heirsbane is basically what happens when a musket and sword are combined, rather than being a sword with a gun attached to it somewhere, which most of the gunblades inFinal Fantasyeffectively are. All in all, it’s clear that this is one formidable weapon.

4Ras Algethi

The underrated Ras Algethi is one of the most versatile and flexible gunblades for ranged combat in the entireFinal Fantasyfranchise. Interestingly, its stats also vary across the different versions ofFinal Fantasy XII, with it having higher base stats in the Zodiac version.

Nevertheless, Ras Algethi is generally relatively easy to obtain and is, on the whole, a dependable weapon. It looks great to boot, resembling Squall’s Revolver (a fittingly mysterious weapon for acharacter with such a complex backstory), and can be used effectively by players with a variety of playstyles, which is a major part of what makes it such a great gunblade in the first place.

3Bradamante

Found inFinal Fantasy XIV, afan-favourite title in the franchise, Bradamante is actually a cross between a halberd and a gun. Not only does this make it an incredibly intimidating weapon to face off against, but it’s also exceptionally effective in combat.

Belonging to the equally imposing Nael van Darnus, Bradamante is certainly a massive part of what makes his character so powerful and formidable on the battlefield. After all, it’s a halberd that fires bullets; definitely not something players would want to encounter in a dark alleyway! And, it’s not hard to see why this is one of the series' most powerful gunblades.

2Overture

The gunblade Overture appears across a range ofFinal Fantasygames and belongs to Lightning, who also happens to be one of the franchise’s most powerful characters (andone of its most underrated). It’s fitting, then, that Overture is her weapon; with an intimidating look that greatly complements Lightning’s aesthetic, Overture turns her into an absolute force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.

Lightning can switch between using Overture as a gun and a sword, too, making it easily one of the most flexible, versatile entries on this list. And, there’s no doubt that it’s one of the most powerful, too.

1Revolver

Revolver is Squall Leonhart’s default gunblade, as well as probably being the franchise’s most iconic weapon (gunblades, after all, have plenty going for them). Like the name suggests, Revolver combines the look of a revolver with a massive sword and is pretty intimidating to look at, too.

It’s worth pointing out that Revolver doesn’t actually operate as a firearm; its gun-themed finishings are purely cosmetic. Nevertheless, it’s such a powerful melee weapon that it’s arguably the strongest gunblade in the entire franchise. And, many fans would argue that it’s the best looking, too, which surely has to count for something!
