It’s still somewhat shocking that fans are not only currently creating an animated adaptation of the classicStar Wars: Knights of the Old RepublicRPG, but that it has received the tacit approval of Lucasfilm itself.Knights of the Old Republicis currently being remade as an animated series using Unreal Engine 5 by a group calling itself Unreal Cinema. However, being a fan production does create certain complications. The latest of which has seen theStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicshow delayed.
When it was officially announced, theStar Wars: The Knights of the Old Republicfan series' first episode was confirmed to be released in October. Obviously, that hasn’t happened, and the Unreal Cinema team is ready to start talking about why that is and what happens next. In its latest video, Unreal Cinema cites the announcement of theStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicremake from Aspyr Mediaas the main reason for the first episode’s delay, as well as several other reasons that are left vague.

The idea is that, since theKnights of the Old Republicfan show is trying to stay in Lucasfilm’s good graces, Unreal Cinema has to play by its rules. While Unreal Cinema doesn’t explicitly state that it’s delaying the show to allowLucasfilmroom for itsKnights of the Old Republicannouncements, it’s implied. As such, Unreal Cinema is delaying its first episode ofKnights of the Old Republicuntil an as-yet-unannounced date. In the meantime, it has something else in store.
If Unreal Cinema can’t release itsKnights of the Old Republicshow at the moment, then it’s going to do something else. In the next few weeks, Unreal Cinema will instead release a side project namedMalak: An Old Republic Story.Malakwill be the first of several anthology-style stories focusing on individual characters fromKnights of the Old Republic. Unreal Cinema describes these shorts as “previously unseen moments” fromKnights of the Old Republic’s history.
The implication is that, since the short is namedMalakand notKnights of the Old Republic, it’s fine forUnreal Cinemato release its short video now while it’s unable to release aKnights of the Old Republicepisode. It seems like a silly situation, but it’s really a miracle the fan-made show is being allowed at all so Unreal Cinema is likely counting its blessings.
Expect continued updates from Unreal Cinema over the coming weeks as it moves closer to the release ofStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s first episode. TheMalakshort animated story will arrive before long, in the meantime.
