Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockoutis often teased as a “dead game”, but that could not be further from the truth. The hit indie party game that exploded in popularity near the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemicwill now become free-to-playafter spending the last two years as a purchasable work. The accessibility upgrades do not end there, asFall Guyswill also go multiplatform after only being available on PC and PlayStation 4. To top it all off, the cross-play features will also be improved. With all the updates the game is getting, it is safe to say thatFall Guysis currently in a good spot.

However, with a conversion to free-to-play comes an inability to profit from players simply purchasing the game. Usually, games like this have to resort to other tactics to make money, such as microtransactions, something thatFall Guysalready has. If the game wants to continue attracting players beyond the initial hype surrounding it being free, it cannot afford to be distracted from quality-of-life improvements. WhileFall Guysis a competent game, and making it more accessible is always a neat thing to do, there are still things that need to be improved.

Fall Guys Needs More Features

Fall Guys’ sixth seasonis getting stagnant. Words of a seventh season being released in March were spread, but nothing came out of that rumor, not even an announcement. This may be because the developers were working on porting the game and tweaking it to accommodate its new free-to-play status, but the game has become rather monotonous lately. Players can hope that this is merely a hiatus due to the game’s bigger updates, but it is hard to tell within the current gaming landscape.

Fall Guyshas surprisingly changed a lot since it was released in the last stretch of summer of 2020. There are far more mini games, as well as a wider selection of types of mini games in general. The game has been consistent in its support when it comes to cosmetics, adding various costumes and guest characters. It has been genuinely trying to keep itself fresh and engaging. However, it is encountering certain obstacles that prevent it from reaching its full potential. There is plenty of room formore customization inFall Guys, but the opportunity has yet to be seized.

For one, while there are plenty of customizable options to play around with, the character creation system could be more meticulous, particularly when changing a Fall Guy’s color or giving the character certain accessories. The fact that there is no proper color grid inFall Guys, whilegames likeDark Soulshave one, is strange. The skin patterns already have predetermined colors, which is likely why the game lacks a color grid, but one could be implemented into the game, with Mediatonic advertising the patterns as opposed to forcing players to settle on using them.

There are also issues like alternate game modes being in rotation instead of just being accessible all the time. While some of them are associated with challenges, explaining their tendency to disappear as quickly as they showed up, others, like modes centered onone particularFall Guysmini-game, should be given more attention. Further, they could simply be made available at all times.

Fall Guyshas a promising future and will even have a level editor. Mediatonic is clearly passionate about its work, and it shows. However, the game has preexisting issues or underwhelming traits that should be taken care of after the big update. Hopefully, the focus will be less on adding more payable features and more on addressing these flaws.

Fall Guysis available now for PC and PS4, with Epic Games Store, PS5, Switch, and Xbox versions scheduled to release on June 21.
