With a world as large as theBorderlandsuniverse, there are bound to be unanswered questions around every corner. Who or What is Zer0?
Zer0 remains as one the most enigmatic characters within the franchise. This haiku-slinging, leet-speaking hired assassin is a favorite among fans, mostly because of his outwardly cool nature and obsession with taking on challenges like the player. However, it would be an overstatement to say that fans have any idea about his origins. Fans do not even know if Zer0 is a human, alien, or robot, and his four-fingered hands don’t make things any easier.Zer0’s connection to FL4Kdoes suggest that he is indeed a robot, but even if that was the case, fans would like to know for certain. He will likely remain a mystery untilBorderlandschooses to take off his mask.
Who Are The Sirens?
The sirens are a strange group of magically-gifted women, mostly because of how much power they hold. Not the powers they wield themselves, but the power they have to influence the history of the universe and well as being able change the outcome of a timeline through their actions. They also have a strange relationship with the material called eridium, as it can often provide a huge boost to their powers. However, it has yet to be explained why exactly they were given these powers, and why only six sirens can exist within the universe at a time. It seems as if the sirens have a greater cosmic calling, and will one day be needed to accomplish some kind of goal. For now,who the sirens ofBorderlandsareand where they come from are questions that remain unanswered.
Where Is The Seventh Siren?
BeforeBorderlands 3, players were told that only six sirens can exist at a time. Players would later learn that this is not the case, with there being aseventh, more dangerous sirensomewhere in the universe. Players learn this through the writings of an ancient siren named Nyriad who had lived among the ancient race of Eridians and even helped to seal the Destroyer. Despite dealing with one of the most dangerous beings the universe, Nyriad still describes the seventh siren as something to never seek out. This could mean that it is just as much of a threat to the universe as the Destroyer, if not more. Whatever the truth may be, it will likely be brought up during the main story of a future installment.
Who Is The Watcher and Who Was The Seer?
The Watcher is character that made their introduction inBorderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Their inclusion was strange and unsettling, as it only appears twice: once in the beginning and again at the end to warn Sanctuary of an impending war. As of now, very little is known of how and why they know about future events. What is known is that they are incredibly ancient, having been described by Nyriad’s writings as a guardian that simply stood and watched as theinfamous Destroyer was sealedthousands of years ago. One of the most curious things about the Watcher is its intelligence, as it was seemingly given a higher calling than its other guardian counterparts. This may be the case, as it is not the only guardian of its kind in the franchise.
The Seer is a character introduced inBorderlands 3, and shares many traits with the Watcher. In fact, theBorderlands' Watcher and the Seerlikely have the same goal in mind: the preservation of the universe. The Seer makes several suggestions to the player throughoutBorderlands 3, such as helping either the Vault Hunters or Calypso Twins at certain parts of the story. It even claims that Lilith slamming into the moon at the end ofBorderlands 3was a bad decision that has altered the fate of the universe. Through Ava’s Murder Mystery quest line, the player even learns that the Seer has manipulated individuals from theBorderlandsthe universe to “correct” the timeline and prevent the end of the universe. For that reason, it is likely that the Watcher and Seer do not care about the inhabitance, rather the future of the universe as a whole. They are reminiscent of the trope of AI getting out of control and committing atrocities based on the idea of “the greater good.”

The Watcher’s War
At the end ofBorderlands: The Pre-Sequel, the Watcher warns Lilith about an impending war. WhileBorderlands 3did include a war, this was stated to not be the war the Watcher spoke of. The Watcher also told Lilith they will need to gather more Vault Hunters in order to prepare for said war. However, no more details would be provided about this war it remains a mystery as of now. Despite Lilith changing the course of history according to the Seer, this war seems like it is still bound to happen. This means the Watcher may know about future events than the Seer, which is strange considering one would think they would be working together. The Watcher seems to have prediction capabilities beyond that of the Seer, which makes the cause of this war all the more suspicious, especially considering how the Seer has manipulated people throughout theBorderlandsfranchise.Borderlands 4will likely feature the Watcher’s War, but there is still a chance it could be put off for later installments.
Though it is not knownhow long fans will have to wait forBorderlands 4, it will likely be worth the wait if fans finally get some answers to these questions. It may even be the case that these mysteries end up crossing over with one another, creating an overarching plot thatBorderlandsfans could only dream of. Whatever the case may be, the build up is certainly leading up to a satisfying pay-off.
