Elden Ringdirector Hidetaka Miyazaki is trying not to let the success of FromSoftware’s latest game be a distraction for when he starts his next project. While FromSoftware’sSoulsgames have been incredibly successful and influential,Elden Ring’s 17.5 million confirmed sales are on another level. It wouldn’t be surprising if FromSoftware felt pressured to recreate that success, or even creatively restrained by fan expectations. Miyazaki is hoping to avoid that, though.

It isn’t justElden Ring’s sales that stand out, though.Elden Ringis already accruing end-of-the-year awards. The PlayStation Partner Awards 2022 Japan Asia ceremony was held on Friday.Elden Ringwalked away with two major awards as part of the event. Not only didElden Ringtake a Users' Choice Awards, voted on by PlayStation fans in Japan and Asia, but it also won the show’s Grand Awards, granted based on overall sales in Japan and Asia.

These two awards are what prompted Miyazaki’s comments during a newly published Famitsu interview. Miyazaki mentioned what a great honor it is to receive the User’s Choice award and was promptly asked what he believes has led toElden Ring’s popularity. Hilariously, Miyazaki response is that he’s at a loss for why, though in truth he tries not to think about it. That’s because he doesn’t want it to be a distraction as he looks toward his next project.

FromSoftware fans won’t be surprised at Miyazaki’s explanation for this. He says that looking forward FromSoftware will continue to make the games that “we want to make.” This is practically a motto for FromSoftware, which has maintained its dedication to creative authenticity through the years. This has largely been brought up with regard to the topic of adding accessibility options inSoulstitles, something Miyazaki has fully rejected.

Miyazaki is more than happy to accept the reputation gained from having a game with such significant sales, though. He says that it should enable a “wonderful environment” that will continue to allowFromSoftwareto make “interesting things that are unique to us.” FromSoftware would certainly have done that regardless of whether it sold 17.5 million copies ofElden Ring, though.

Those hoping for hints regarding Miyazaki’s next project will be disappointed. The interview offers no clues regarding what’s coming next. Miyazaki does seem to imply that he hasn’t started working on his next project, perhaps implying he’s still working onElden RingDLC. Miyazaki could just be acting coy, though. FromSoftware fans will be more than fine waiting to find out, assuredly.

Elden Ringis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
