Dying when death is permanent is always a painful experience, but most will not be as tragic or unfortunate as how a Twitch streamer failed their Hardcore attempt atDiablo 4. The race to reach the maximum level inDiablo 4’s Hardcore mode has been ongoing since the early access period began, with some players forced to restart due to bugs and technical issues.

AlthoughDiablo 4’s official launch is not until June 6, those who purchased more expensive editions of the game have been able to slaughter demons in Sanctuary a little earlier. Diablo 4has gone rather smoothly on PC compared to many modern live service releases. However, consoles were another story, with PlayStation and Xbox owners reporting an error messagethat stated they did not have the required license to start the game. Some workarounds were discovered and the root of the issue has seemingly been fixed since. Compared toDiablo 3’s launch, the sequel has felt like heaven.

That said, sometesting themselves inDiablo 4’s Hardcore modehave not had a flawless experience and Twitch streamer SayfDJ saw his run end in the worst possible way. SayfDJ was in a promising position during an Act 1 boss fight, having reduced the enemy’s health to only a quarter. But the streamer unknowingly clicked open the in-game chat when trying to maneuver their character out of danger. It takes multiple seconds before they begin to shout “I can’t heal,” completely unaware that their button presses are entering “2” and “q” into the chat rather than activating abilities.

Only once their character is slainand the Hardcore attempt is brought to its end, they realize the chat was open. Some commenting on the tragedy criticized the click-to-chat functionality implemented intoDiablo 4, which can understandably present issues when using mouse clicks to navigate. Fortunately, SayfDJ was not too far into the game but how they died could easily be replicated by someone dozens of hours deep intoDiablo 4, no matter their skill.

The first 1000 players to reach level 100 on Hardcore mode are due to have their username immortalized on a statue of Lilith, in a challenge set up byDiablo 4developers. A clarification was offered a few days before the race began, confirming that anyone that had access to areview copy ofDiablo 4would not be eligible, ensuring that no one would be unfairly advantaged.

Diablo 4is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
