Summary
Destiny 2Warlocks might need to brace forThe Final Shapeas the game director just announced a nerf incoming to one of the most popular super abilities, Well of Radiance. Thenew expansion ofDestiny 2is slated to grant three new supersto each class, with Warlocks receiving a Solar-based super focused on dealing enhanced grenade and melee abilities, similar to Radiance fromDestiny. The subclasses will receive new fragments and aspects alongside the new supers to enhance light-based build crafting options.
The charm ofDestiny 2lies in its seamless blend of gunplay and ability-based gameplay to create a unique experience, even among the looter shooter genre. Fans of the game’s combat system have often praised the collaborative in-combat effect of weapon perks and subclass verbs working in tandem or empowering one another to create more powerful builds. The pinnacle of ability-based gameplay is the super ability available to each elemental subclass. Supers produce the most potent effects in a player’s toolkit by either dealing massive damage or protecting a fireteam of six from overwhelming pressure. Due to having the longest cooldown timers, supers are often used to burn bosses or survive add-heavy encounters.

The Well of Radiance super of Solar Warlocks has long been a staple for aspirational endgame encounters, especially on Master and Grandmaster-tier content or theWorld’s First Raid races ofDestiny 2. The super offers potent healing output, damage buffs, and reload speed boosts to every player in its radius, and crafty Warlocks also use the Lunafaction Boots Exotic to improve the fireteam’s reload speeds even further. Unfortunately for Solar Warlocks, Well of Radiance’s day in the sunlight is probably ending, asDestiny 2’s game director Joe Blackburn stated in an interview with PC Gamer. The director further noted how players will choose between healing and empowering with Well of Radiance, as the new Song of Flame super will enhance the scorching capabilities.
We’ve had to do this before with things like Divinity and auto-reloading. At some point you’re like: ‘Hey, this super provides utility that a lot of people like, but we are handcuffing a bunch of our players too. So what’s the version of this where we can say: ‘Okay, the time for everyone feeling like they have to run this is over’. We know that we have to make some changes before The Final Shape raid.
The news should come as little surprise to players, as Well of Radiance has long been the focus of balance and difficulty in the endgame. The super, combined withDestiny 2Exoticslike Divinity, continue to dominate the endgame support and DPS meta, despite the playstyle eliciting a strong response in the community. Many veteran raiders and prolific build crafters have voiced their opinions on Well’s influence in restricting build crafting and player creativity in the endgame.
The eventual nerf will create astrong response among theDestiny 2community, both in support of and against the decision. In the meantime, the upcoming World’s First Raid race for Crota’s End is guaranteed to prove how potent Well of Radiance is in endgame and further influence the conversations around the topic.
Destiny 2is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
