Summary

Following a barrage of abuse hurled at an employee,Destiny 2developer Bungie has permanently banned several accounts that were involved in the incident. What this means is that these perma-bannedDestiny 2players will no longer be able to use their existing Steam account to log in and will, hence, lose their in-game progress.

A few days ago, a Bungie dev became the target of toxic fans after their Steam username was accidentally exposed during aDestiny 2livestream on Twitch. This stream took place as part of the buildup for the forthcomingInto The Lightfree update, which is scheduled for release on April 9. The developer in question received a flurry of disheartening abuse from Steam users who had changed their display names to offensive words. Apart from this, there were many toxic messages on Twitch chat as well.

As revealed on Reddit, Bungie has reacted quickly and cracked down on thetoxicDestinyplayers that hijackedtheInto The Lightlivestream. Precisely, the developer has issued these Steam accounts with a permanent ban from playingDestiny 2. This decision was shared by the game’s official Reddit account, Destiny2Team, in reply to a post addressing this incident. The main post complained about player toxicity inDestiny 2, highlighting the livestream as the latest example of the unfair harassment of devs from members of the community.

In the comments, severalDestiny 2players expressed approval of Bungie’s timely response. While showing appreciation for the move, a user said that they were looking forward to the nextInto The Lightlivestream. Another user chipped in, saying that the ban was expected after the offenders “hand-delivered” their accounts to a developer’s inbox when they sent the latter friend requests.

Destiny 2 Developers Have Faced Toxicity From The Community In The Past As Well

Toxicity in games, especially those with a competitive element, has existed for a long time. And, for the devs working onDestiny 2, this isn’t their first time either. Back in July 2023,Bungie had won a lawsuitagainst aDestiny 2player who was accused of repeatedly sending threats and racial abuse to a community manager. Incidents like these are whyDestiny 2’s community team no longer does one-on-one interaction with fans, instead directing them to give feedback via the game’s website.

Although hate mail and toxicity against developers is something that can’t be resolved instantly, timely, strict actions against offenders are still necessary in the least. Such prompt decisions don’t just punish these players for their actions but also discourages others in the community from doing something similar. WithDestiny 2’snever-ending player toxicity, it will be interesting to see if the developers carry forward the same no-nonsense approach when tackling such issues in the future.
