A bizarre bug inCrisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunionhas a voice clip from Zack Fair’s original voice actor, Rick Gomez, play in one of its cutscenes.Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunionis an enhanced remaster of the original prequel game from 2007, expanding the narrative of the original JRPG with more lore and backstory for certain characters. This game in particular depicted a series of events that took place beforeFinal Fantasy 7, placing the player in the strapped SOLDIER boots of Zack Fair, an integral character of Cloud’s past and backstory.

Zack Fair’s performance in the originalCrisis Corewas a highlight for many players, as fans believed that his actor, Rick Gomez, made him both an epic hero and a loveable character in his own right. Gomez would continue playing the character in various spin-offs and media, up untilFinal Fantasy 7: Remakeand subsequently theReunionremaster, where he was recasted with Caleb Pierce. When fanscompare Zack’s two voices, while some do like Pierce’s performance, a majority still prefer the old dub. It seems traces of this old dub still exist within the files ofReunionas well, evidenced by this strange bug.

Discovered by JRPG YouTuber Faz, he posted a video that shows a cutscene from late in the game, whereZack is carrying Cloud to Midgar, the two taking a break. He’s then discovered by Turk member Cissnei, who he draws his sword on. Around the 30-second mark of the video, Zack questions why Cissnei is approaching them, which longtime players recognize as Zack’s old performance by Gomez. The change between the two voices is quite jarring, evidenced by the line afterwards that uses Pierce’s performance.

Some fans also recognized that Cissnei herself had the same bug, where very briefly a clip of her former voice actor from the original dub is played when she recognizes Cloud. With this old voice clip present, some fans believe that the voice clips from the original game exist within the game’s files and are likely dummied out to not play. Considering that there is aCrisis Coremod in the worksthat is replacing the new voices with the old ones, it’s likely the modders are searching through the internal files to accomplish this.

While theCrisis Coreremaster has been praisedfor reintroducing characters to the prequel, along with adding a number of quality-of-life improvements to the original game, there have been many critiques about it as well. Some are still upset at Square Enix’s choice to cast Pierce for Zack, especially when the script for the remaster is exactly the same as the original, giving fans a direct comparison between the two actors.
