Chucky, the star of theChild’s Playfranchise, has been a horror icon for decades since the firstChild’s Playfilm was released in 1988. Now, Syfy will be continuing the legacy with a brand-new series based on the character and past stories of Chucky, and a new trailer has been released by the channel that shows viewers exactly what fans of theChild’s Playfranchise will be in for.
The most recent continuation ofChild’s Playwas a feature film reboot of the franchise released in June of 2019. The film featuredParks and Recreationstar Aubrey Plaza and repurposed Chucky as a robotic prototype of a doll soon to be prepared for mass production. The reboot received mixed to positive reviews and was a modest box office success for distributor Orion Pictures, proving that Chucky content can attract horror movie audiences.

The newChuckyseries and its trailer promise a story about an idyllic suburban town that is turned upside down when a teenager buys a “Good Guy” doll that mysteriously appears at a yard sale. The teenager develops a strange connection with the doll, though the doll begins to disturb the town. The town is then thrown into chaos and turmoil after the doll commits a series of murders. The series starsThe 5th Wavechild star Zackary Arthur as well as a slew of recognizable character actors includingLongmire’s Teo Briones andFinal Destination’s Devon Sawa, with longtimeChuckyseries actors Jennifer Tilly and Alex Vincent making returns alongside original Chucky voice actor Brad Dourif. The show is written and created by Don Mancini, who has either written or directed seven of the previousChuckyfilms as well as various episodes ofHannibalandChannel Zero.
Cable channels have been making strides to adapt to the current television climate after many consumers have decided on cutting the cord in favor of streaming services. SyFy is one such channel; they’ve been airing episodes of DC shows such asthe animatedHarley Quinnseriesin addition to new shows such asResident Alien, but they have been in need of a major draw to their channel after high-profile shows such asThe MagiciansandVan Helsingcame to an end.
Chucky is commonly rankedamong other horror villains such as Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, and Candyman as one of the all-time most recognizable horror film characters. So, with a recognizable name likeChucky, SyFy will certainly draw in horror buffs to the channel while scaring them senseless in the process.
